SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over USC Lancaster in the 2012 home opener for the Terriers Tuesday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Terriers improve to 1-2 overall, while the Lancers fall to 0-2 on the year.
Action began with doubles play, where the duo of Tinus Van Wyk and Rob Galloway defeated Dave Fosnacht and Wilson Mathewes (8-2) at the No. 1 position, and the pairing of George Handy and Drew Superstein defeated Matt Canelon and Justin Lewis (8-2) at the No. 3 position to give Wofford the doubles point. The team of Jackson Keith and Walker Heffron defeated Pedro Rodriguez and Neil Andersen (8-6) at the No. 2 position to give the Terriers the sweep.
In singles action, Walker Heffron downed Matt Canelon (6-1, 6-3) in straight sets to claim his second consecutive singles win at the No. 6 position. Drew Superstein defeated Wilson Mathewes (6-1, 6-0) at the No. 2 spot, and Tom Wood defeated Justin Lewis (6-1, 6-2) at the No. 5 spot to seal the overall win for the Terriers. At the No. 1 position, Tinus Van Wyk downed Pedro Rodriguez (6-1, 6-1), and Rob Galloway picked up a win over Neil Andersen (6-3, 6-1) at the No. 4 position.
"I'm especially appreciative of everyone who came out for today's first home match," stated Wofford head coach Rod Ray. "We had a very nice home crowd for the last day of January and the team really appreciates the support. My hats off to a well-coached USCL team for coming here and playing hard. Today was a good experience for us and provided us with a valuable opportunity to improve in several important areas. It's vitally important that we learn from every early match and today is no exception. We took a lot away from today's match."
The Terriers will travel south for their next match as they head to Florida Atlantic. The match will take place on Saturday, February 4th at 12:00 p.m.
