SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State's Jay Canty has been named the Southern Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for all games played Nov. 27-Dec. 3.  Canty averaged 22.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists in two games last week.

A forward, Canty tallied his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 assists in a 73-72 loss to Duquesne.  His 10 assists were the most for a Mountaineer since D.J. Thompson dished out 11 against the College of Charleston in 2007.

Canty followed that performance with a game-high 29 points and six rebounds in the Mountaineers' loss at No. 16 Missouri.  The Jamestown, N.C., native was 11-of-19 from the field against the Tigers and his 29 points were the most for a Mountaineer since Donald Sims scored 32 against CofC in 2011.

The sophomore shot 51 percent from the field last week and connected on 89 percent of his free throws.  Canty ranks second in the SoCon in scoring (18.1 ppg) and is 10th in rebounding (6.3 rpg).  He has made 81 percent of his free throws this season and ranks eighth in the league, while his 3.3 assists per contest place him ninth.

Appalachian State (1-6, 0-0 SoCon) has the week off and will travel to face Western Carolina (3-5, 1-0 SoCon) Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included College of Charleston's Willis Hall, The Citadel's Mike Groselle, UNCG's Trevis Simpson, Chattanooga's Gee McGhee, Samford's Tim Williams, Western Carolina's Tawaski King and Wofford's Karl Cochran.
