JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Anna Freeman became the fourth
all-time leading scorer in Appalachian State University women's basketball
history (1,505). She tallied 13 points in Tuesday's 85-57 victory over former
conference foe East Tennessee State University.
For the fourth straight time, Appalachian State (7-1, 1-0
SoCon) picked up a win against East Tennessee State, (2-4, 0-0) trouncing the
Buccaneers and totaling its winning streak to six.
Maryah Sydnor marked Appalachian's first points with a
layup, and the Mountaineers maintained control from there, as the lead changed
just twice in the contest. App entered an early nine point run (24-11) at 12:31
in the first half, but ETSU rallied with a quick four point burst late in the
half with 3:33 remaining, trimming the Mountaineer lead to just three points
(34-31). A pair of free-throws from ETSU's Shawn Randall brought the Bucs
within two (38-36), before Katie Mallow dropped a pair of shots at the line to
send App into halftime with a 40-36 advantage.
Sydnor paced the Black and Gold throughout the game and led
the Mountaineers in scoring, contributing 23 points on the night; thirteen of
those points came in the first half. Sydnor was one of four Mountaineers to
record double-figures.
Tiana Burley, who lead the Bucs in scoring with 19 points,
threw a layup at 12:59, giving the Buccaneers their only lead (50-49), before
Appalachian increased the margin; leading by as much as 30 points in the second
half of the contest. Courtney Freeman was once again an offensive standout,
recording a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds; ten of which came on
defense. Katie Mallow added 16 points of her own, and shot 3-3 from the line.
Despite a strong effort, the three-time defending Atlantic
Sun champions were unable to climb back in the game, resulting in a 85-57 final
for Appalachian State.
Oregon 72, Samford 61
EUGENE, Ore.—The Samford women’s basketball team dropped a
hard-fought contest on the road, falling by a score of 72-61, at Oregon Tuesday
evening in the Matthew Knight Arena.
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, falling behind 11-0,
but fought back to tie the game, but could never get over the hump, eventually
falling by 11 points.
Samford was led in scoring by senior guard Jazmine Martin
with 13 points, all in the second half. Freshman guard Krista Stricklin posted
her first career double-double, scoring a career-high 12 points and grabbing a
career-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Taylor Reece also scored 12 points, while
junior Shelby Campbell added 11 points for the Bulldogs.
Oregon was led by Danielle Love with 17 points. Ariel Thomas
scored 15 points, while Jordan Loera added 14 points. Jillian Alleyne scored 11
points and grabbed 19 rebounds for the Ducks.
As a team, Samford shot 33.8 percent overall and 33.3
percent from three-point range, while Oregon made 40.7 percent of its shots
overall and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc. Oregon outrebounded Samford,
43-35.
After Oregon’s 11-0 run to start the game, the teams traded
baskets over the next several minutes until, with Samford trailing, 20-8, the
Bulldogs went on a 14-2 run to tie the score at 22-22 with 9:06 to go in the
half after a three-pointer by Stricklin.
Oregon scored the next six points to take a 28-22 lead with
7:48 left in the opening period after a three-pointer by Loera. Samford fought
back to cut the lead to three points at 30-27 with 5:20 to go in the half after
a three-pointer by Stricklin. Oregon, however, scored the final seven points of
the half to take a 37-27 lead into halftime.
Samford opened the second half with a 10-0 run to tie the
game at 37-37 with 17:39 to go in the game after a three-pointer by Martin.
Oregon answered with a 9-0 run of its own to take a 46-37 with 13:53 to go after
a three-pointer by Chynna Miley. Samford fought back to cut the lead to five
points at 49-44 with 9:38 to go after a jumper by Reece.
Oregon scored six of the next seven points to push its lead
back out to 10 points at 55-45 with 6:55 to go after a jumper by Thomas. The
Bulldogs came back again to close to within five points at 58-53, 60-55 and
62-57, but Samford could get no closer, eventually falling by a score of 72-61.
With the loss, Samford falls to 5-4 on the season. Oregon
improves to 2-8 with the win.
Samford will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 22, when the
Bulldogs play at Clemson. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. (CT) start from
the Clemson campus.
Stetson 70, Georgia
Southern 39
DELAND, Fla. – Jama Sharp scored 16 points, and Victoria
McGowan added 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead Stetson to a
70-39 women’s basketball victory over Georgia Southern in the Hatter Classic
Tuesday afternoon in the Edmunds Center.
MiMi DuBose led the Eagles (1-6) with 12 points, and Anna
Claire Knight scored 10.
Sharp was 7-of-10 from the floor and 2-for-4 from 3-point
range for the Hatters (6-4). Ashley Dennis scored 12 points, and Cherisse
Burris tallied 11 points and six rebounds.
The Hatters shot 52 percent from the field for the game
while holding Georgia Southern to 31 percent. Most of that difference came in
the paint, where Stetson outscored the Eagles 34-12. The Hatters also scored 24
points off 21 Eagle turnovers and used 13 offensive rebounds to score 11
second-chance points.
A 10-2 run midway through the first half turned a 15-11
Hatter advantage into a 12-point cushion as McGowan scored the last five points
of the stretch. After the Hatters pushed the margin to 14 points on a McGowan
triple with 3:37 left in the half, DuBose answered with a conventional 3-point
play and Ronnesha Smith drilled a jumper to trim the lead to single digits.
Sharp scored on a jumper, and then added a 3-pointer with
seven seconds left on the clock to give the Hatters a 38-24 cushion at the
break. The sophomore then scored four points in an 11-5 run to start the second
half as the Hatters opened a 20-point lead. GSU was never able to get within
striking distance for the rest of the way.
The Eagles continue action in the Hatter Classic tomorrow
against Bethune-Cookman. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
