KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Six Southern Conference men’s soccer players earned spots on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) University Division Scholar All-South Region Teams, the organization announced Friday.

Wofford’s Alex Hutchins earned first-team honors, while Matt Wescoe (Elon), Michael Gandier (Furman), Peyton Ford (UNCG) and Billy Padula (Wofford) earned spots on the second team. Furman’s Alex Crooks took honorable mention.

Wofford’s Hutchins, a first-team NSCAA All-South Region selection and CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Third Team pick, boasts a 3.48 GPA and is majoring in biology.

The senior midfielder from Knoxville, Tenn., started all 21 games for the Terriers this season and led the team in points (28) and goals (13).   He was selected to the All-Southern Conference First Team after receiving second-team honors last season. In Wofford’s Division I era, he ranks first in career goals, career points, goals in a season, and points in a season. He helped the Terriers to the SoCon Championship title game this season.

Elon’s Wescoe played in all 22 matches on the year and led the Phoenix with seven assists. The junior midfielder was second on the squad in goals (six) and points (19). The Willow Springs, N.C., native was a third-team All-Southern Conference selection this season after helping the Maroon and Gold capture both the league’s regular-season and tournament titles in the same year for the first time in program history.

A political science major with a 3.56 GPA, Wescoe was named to the SoCon All-Tournament team this season and earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District 3 first team last month.

Furman’s Gandier fashioned a productive junior campaign by netting five goals, including a team-best three game-winners, during the 2012 season while logging playing time as a midfielder and as a center back.  The Hastings, Minn., native and business administration major scored overtime winners in a 3-2 victory over Clemson and a 4-3 triumph at Wofford during the month of October.

Gandier sports a 3.58 grade point average and is majoring in business. He helped Furman to a spot in the national rankings and a 12-4-3 record.

UNCG’s Ford was a second-team All-Southern Conference selection in each of the last two seasons. The redshirt senior goalkeeper finished his career fifth in SoCon history with 308 career saves and tied for fifth with 21 shutouts. He posted a 1.51 goals against average this year, making 68 saves and posting three shutouts.

The Jamestown, N.C., native owns a 3.98 GPA and is majoring in political science.

Wofford’s Padula finished second in the league with eight assists on the season, all of them off of long throw-ins. The junior defender started all 21 matches and helped the Terriers to six shutouts on the year.

Padula, an Irmo, S.C., native, owns a 3.86 GPA in business economics and government.

Crooks, a second team choice in 2011, garnered third team honors after scoring two goals in 17 matches for the Paladins.  The Alpharetta, Ga., native and business administration major posted goals in Furman victories over UNC Wilmington and North Florida as a senior.

Crooks boasts a 3.37 GPA and is majoring in business.
