Arkansas 73, Furman 38

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Melissa Wolff scored 15 points and paced a contingent of four double figure scorers, and Arkansas used pressure defense to force 27 turnovers en route to a 73-38 victory over Furman in women’s basketball action Sunday afternoon at Timmons Arena.

The win was the sixth straight for Arkansas (8-1) while the loss represented the fifth consecutive setback for Furman (3-6), which was held under 40 points for the third straight game.

Arkansas’ full court press paved the way to a 29-3 differential in points off turnovers, and the Razorbacks’  superior depth gave them a 43-11 advantage in bench scoring.

Wolf compiled her game high 15-point effort by connecting on 5-of-6 shots from the field and at the free throw line.  The freshman guard also collected five rebounds and two steals.

Keira Peak followed with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and a steal, and Erin Gatling contributed 11 points to go along with four steals and three assists.  Sarah Watkins rounded out the double-digit scoring effort with 10 points.

Furman, which was again forced to compete without injured starters Sarah Durdaller and Janice Roberts, was led in scoring by freshman Erica Norwood with 12 points.

The Paladins converted just 11-of-48 shots in the contest (22.9 percent).

Furman led 6-2 four minutes into the game, but a 10-0 Arkansas run, spiced by two Watkins baskets over the next two and half minutes, quickly put the Razorbacks in control.

After a pair of free throws by Furman’s Holli Wilkins ended the run, Arkansas answered with a 12-0 spurt  to go up 24-8 following a Dominique Robinson layup with 7:28 to go in the first half.

The Paladins, who turned the ball over on four of their first five possessions of the second half, were never able to mount an effective run over the game’s final 20 minutes.

Furman will play Marshall in Huntington, W.Va., on Thursday in a 2:00 p.m. game.
