SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Casey Garvey, Georgia Southern’s Alexandra Beecher, and Chattanooga’s Briana Reid have been named the SoCon Offensive, Defensive and Freshman Volleyball Players of the Week, respectively, for November 5.  The selections are made by the conference office. 

Garvey, a senior setter, earned her eighth double-double of the season (58 assists, 16 digs) in the Bulldogs’ 3-1 senior night victory over UNCG. Garvey also tied a career-high with seven kills against Elon, and was third on the team in digs last weekend. The Louisville, Ky., native hit .458 (12 kills) with one total block, one service ace, 25 digs, and 106 assists for Samford last weekend.

Beecher, a freshman defensive specialist, was named Defensive Player of the Week for the second-consecutive week and the third time this season. The Orlanda, Fla. native set a new school record with 40 digs in the Eagles’ 3-2 victory over Western Carolina on Saturday, which extended GSU’s win streak to nine matches. She broke the record of 33 previously held by Stacy Lewis, who set the mark against Appalachian State in 1995. Beecher averaged eight digs per set and also tallied three assists, an ace and a kill. The freshman is averaging 5.09 digs per set during the Eagles’ current winning streak and has posted 20 or more digs in 11 matches this season, including the last three.

Chattanooga’s Briana Reid was named the SoCon Freshman of the Week, her second honor of the season. The outside hitter from Houston, Texas, recorded a double-double in each of the Mocs’ three matches last week. She now has five career double-doubles. In Chattanooga’s win over UNCG on Friday, Reid posted a career-high 17 kills and a career-high 26 digs to help the Mocs overcome a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Spartans, 3-2. Reid posted 42 kills, four total blocks, two assists and 64 digs for Chattanooga last week.

Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week were Appalachian State’s Jacqui Spurgeon, College of Charleston’s Darcy Dorton, The Citadel’s Rachael Farrell, Davidson’s Caroline Brown, Elon’s Chanelle Smith, Furman’s Chandler Ambrester, Georgia Southern’s Meredith Paskert, Chattanooga’s Heather Parman, Western Carolina’s Caitlin Piechota, and Wofford’s Amanda Liguori.

Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week were Appalachian State’s Courtney Rhein, College of Charleston’s Emily Shelton, The Citadel’s Erin Bucherl, Davidson’s Molly Crenshaw, Furman’s Chandler Ambrester, Samford’s Alexis Bauer, Chattanooga’s Paula Passmore, Western Carolina’s Addy George, and Wofford’s Reagan Styles.

Also nominated for Freshman of the Week were Appalachian State’s Jess Keller, College of Charleston’s Melissa Morello, The Citadel’s Mikaela Tracy, Furman’s Jo Wilks, Georgia Southern’s Alexandra Beecher, and Western Carolina’s Tina Nazario.
