JACKSONVILLE, Ala.—The Samford women’s basketball team
outscored Jacksonville State 13-2 over the last 6:24 of the game to come back
for a 48-45 win Monday night at JSU’s Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Samford trailed by eight points, 43-35, with 6:24 to go in
the game. A three-pointer and a jumper by Shelby Campbell, and a three-pointer
by Taylor Reece tied the score at 43-43 with 4:26 to go. After a free throw by
Hannah Dawson gave Samford a 44-43 lead, JSU took the lead again at 45-44 with
1:05 left after a jumper by Marikate Gardler.
Campbell then put Samford ahead for good at 47-45 with a
three-pointer with 44 seconds to go. Campbell then made a late free throw with
nine seconds to go to make the score 48-45. JSU had one final possession, but
Samford’s Lydia McGee came up with a steal to seal the win for the Bulldogs.
Samford was led in scoring by Campbell with 17 points, with
nine of those points coming during the game-winning 13-2 run. Campbell also
shared the team lead in rebounding with six.
Jazmine Martin followed Campbell with nine points. Reece and
Kendall Schwantz scored seven points each. Schwantz also grabbed six rebounds.
McGee dished out four assists in the win.
Jacksonville State was led by Miranda Cantrell with 12
points and six rebounds. Dashauna Truss scored eight points and pulled down six
boards. Peyton Hisel added seven points for the Gamecocks.
Samford jumped out to an early 8-3 lead with 13:59 left in
the first half after a layup by Martin. Jacksonville State came back with a 9-0
run to take a 12-8 lead with 9:19 left in the half following a basket by Briana
Morrow.
Samford fought back to cut the lead to one at 13-12 with
8:13 left in the half after a basket by Martin. Jacksonville State pushed its
lead out to as much as six at 18-12, and the Gamecocks took a 25-19 lead into
halftime.
Samford opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take a
brief 28-27 lead with 16:37 left in the game after a layup by Schwantz. Jacksonville
State answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead again at 35-28 with 13:07 left
after a jumper by Truss.
Samford scored the next four points to cut the lead to three
at 35-32 with 11:59 left after a jumper by McGee. JSU went on an 8-3 run to
push its lead to eight at 43-35 before Samford’s game-winning run.
With the win, Samford improves to 1-1. Jacksonville State
drops to 0-4 with the loss. Samford has now won six in a row and 11 of its last
12 in the series with Jacksonville State.
Samford will return to action on Friday, Nov. 23, when the
Bulldogs open the Samford Thanksgiving Classic by taking on Alabama State at 4
p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.
