Furman?s Jamie Alexander Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman freshman forward Jamie Alexander has been named the Southern Conference’s women’s soccer player of the week for all matches Oct. 24. The award is selected by the league office.

Alexander earned the final weekly award of the 2012 season by scoring a pair of goals in the Paladins’ 3-2, double-overtime win over Wofford on Wednesday to lock up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming SoCon Women’s Soccer Championship. Furman finished the regular season with a 7-2-2 league mark.

The Martinez, Ga., native scored her first goal in the 38th minute to put Furman ahead 2-0. After the Terriers rallied to tie the contest in the second half, Alexander gave the Paladins the win with her second goal of the night in the 102nd minute.

The weekly award is the first of Alexander’s career and the Paladins’ second this season, as Stephanie DeVita took the award on Oct. 2.

Alexander became the fifth different freshman to be honored this season. Six of the 11 weekly awards went to rookies, while three more went to sophomores.

Furman (14-3-2) will host No. 6 seed Davidson (7-9-3) at 4 p.m. Sunday at Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium in the first round of the SoCon tournament. The semifinals and championship will be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium in Birmingham, Ala., on Nov. 2 and 4, respectively.

Also nominated: Meggie Graham (Appalachian State), Eli Sarasola (College of Charleston), Claire O’Keeffe (Elon), Alex Murphy (Georgia Southern), Katherine Rodriguez (UNCG), Trine Taule (Samford) and Alex Kachulis (Wofford).
