Women's Soccer Tournament Field Set

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Regular-season champion UNCG has claimed the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Championship.

The event begins Sunday with the top four seeds hosting first-round matches. The semifinals and championship will be played at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium in Birmingham, Ala., on Nov. 2 and 4, respectively.

The Spartans finished the regular season with a 9-1-1 league mark for their sixth regular-season title in the last seven seasons. UNCG will host No. 8 seed Georgia Southern on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Eagles finished the regular season with a 4-6-1 SoCon mark and topped Davidson 1-0 on Wednesday to earn a berth.

Samford, the 2011 tournament champion, took the No. 2 seed after wrapping up the regular season with an 8-1-2 league mark. The Bulldogs will host No. 7 seed College of Charleston (5-5-1 SoCon) in a rematch of last season’s final. That contest will take place at 2 p.m. Central time.

No. 3 seed Furman turned in a 7-2-2 SoCon record and will host No. 6 seed Davidson at 4 p.m. Sunday. The Wildcats finished the season with a 5-5-1 league mark.

No. 4 seed Appalachian State will host a first-round match for the first time in program history. The Mountaineers, who went 7-3-1 in conference play this season, will take on No. 5 seed Elon on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Phoenix finished the 2012 regular-season campaign with a 4-3-4 league record.

The tournament winner earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship.
