Wofford finishes second at Wendy’s Invitational

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Wofford women’s golf team fired the lowest third round score of the Wendy’s Invitational as the Terriers moved up the leaderboard with a second-place finish at the par-72, 6,021-yard Arnold Palmer Signature Course on Tuesday morning.

 

Wofford finished the 54-hole event with a team score of 905. The Terriers shot a 310 in the opening round and followed with a 294 in round two. Wofford’s 301 over the final 18 holes was the lowest team third-round score. Wofford entered the day seven strokes back of host Charleston Southern but ended the tournament one stroke lower than the Bucs, who shot a 309 in the third round.

 

Richmond took the top team spot with an 893, and Southern Conference opponent Appalachian State finished fourth after a 917. Armstrong Atlantic rounded out the top five with a 920. Wofford also finished ahead of two other SoCon schools, Western Carolina (946) and The Citadel (1,001).

 

Lauren Dunbar finished in a tie for seventh as she completed the 54-hole event with a 74-75-74=223. It was Dunbar’s third top-10 finish this season and fourth of her career. Maegan Higgins earned her second top-10 finish of the season as she finished eighth after carding a 78-73-73=224. Anne Marie Covar also finished in the top 10, the eighth of her career and third of the season, as she entered the clubhouse after a 78-72-75=225 and finished ninth. Alex Hendricks finished in a tie for 32nd after an 80-74-82=236, and Elizabeth Thompson finished tied for 36th with an 80-78-79=237.

 

Shelby Winters competed as an individual for the Terriers and finished in a tie for 21st with a 78-77-77=232.

 

Richmond’s Tracy Martin took the top individual spot with a 70-73-72=215.

 

Wofford will wrap up its fall schedule with a match against Appalachian State in Boone, N.C., on October 22.

 

Appalachian State third at Wendy’s Invitational

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Appalachian State’s women’s golf team wrapped up the final day of the CSU Wendy’s Invitational on Tuesday afternoon as the Mountaineers finished fourth in a strong 13-team field at Rivertowne Country Club.

For the final round, the Black and Gold shot a 310 to give them a total of 917 (+53), falling short of tournament champion Richmond by 24 strokes.

Senior Rumbidzai Masamvu paced the Apps by being consistent, firing three straight 73s for a final score of 219 (+3). Masamvu matched her total from last week as she fired +3 en route to a team championship at the Winthrop Intercollegiate.

Following Masamvu was senior Lauren Smith, who tied for 18th overall with a 77-75-79=219 (+15) and sophomore Elena Thomas, who carded a 78-74-81=233 (+17), placing her in a tie for 26th.

Senior Mimi Burke finished in a tie for 36th, as she tallied a 76-81-80=237 (+21), and senior Yue Xu came in 42nd with a 79-81-78=238 (+22).

Richmond was the only team in the field to shot under 900, as Wofford finished in second with 905 and host Charleston Southern finished third, one stroke behind the Terriers.

The Mountaineers return to the links on Friday, Oct. 28, at the Lady Paladin Invitational at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C. The tournament will conclude on Saturday, Oct. 29.

 

Western Carolina finishes tied for eighth at Wendy’s Invitational

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Western Carolina women’s golf team struggled through Tuesday’s final round of the Wendy’s Invitational, combining to shoot 330 collectively and slip into a two-way tie for eighth place in the final standings at the par-72, 6,021-yard Rivertowne Country Club. The Catamounts finished with a 54-hole score of 946, knotted with USC Upstate in the final rankings.

Tied for the tournament lead through 36 holes, WCU sophomore Maria Kjelldorff fell off on the final day of competition, carding an 87 over the final round to slip into a two-way tie for 14th place – making her the highest-finishing Catamount. Her 54-hole score of 229 was her seasonal-low.

Freshman Taylor Allison matched her second-round score of 79 during Tuesday’s third round to card the best 18 holes for Western Carolina on the day. She finished tied for 29th overall with a three-round score of 235.

Senior Michelle Bello just missed her career-best 54-hole score, shooting 8-over 80 on Tuesday to finish at 240, tied for 46th overall. It was her second-lowest three-round score of the season. Freshman Fatima Gonzales-Carriles posted her career-best 54-hole score at 247, shooting 85 on Tuesday for the best finish of her young WCU career, tied for 58th. Classmate Mariah Hopkins finished in 66th overall, shooting 86 on Tuesday for a two-day tally of 251.

First-round leader Richmond claimed the team championship by 12 strokes over runner-up Wofford, 893-to-905. Tournament host Charleston Southern slipped to third, one stroke in arrears of the Terriers at 906, with Appalachian State (917) and Armstrong Atlantic (920) rounding out the top five finishers.

Richmond’s Tracy Martin advanced two spots from her third-place tie after 36 holes on Monday to claim individual medalist honors by two strokes, posting an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Martin edged Jenna Birch from Armstrong Atlantic, 215-to-217, with Appalachian State’s Rumbidzai Masamvu finishing in third at 3-over 219.

The tournament concluded the fall portion of Western Carolina’s 2012-13 schedule. The Catamounts return to the links in early March, traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., for the first of two events in the Sunshine State at the Eagle Landing Invitational, hosted by James Madison at the Eagle Landing Country Club.

 

The Citadel in finish 13th at Wendy’s Invitational

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Citadel freshman Erica Manor, who appeared in her fourth tournament this fall, fired a three-round score of 237 (+21) and finished in a six-way tie for 36th at the Wendy's Invitational at Rivertowne Country Club.

Manor opened the tournament with scores of 76 and 78 before posting a final-round 83. Teammate Erica Pellegrini fired consecutive rounds in the 70s (74, 77) on Monday but withdrew on Tuesday.

The Citadel also received solid outings from Kellie Anderson (81-81-92=254), who placed 67th, Hollie Salvo (83-85-91=259) and Amelia Goodwin (104-91-100=295).

Team honors for the tournament went to Richmond, who finished with a score of 893 (293-294-306). Second place went to SoCon rival Wofford (905) and third to tournament host Charleston Southern (906). The Citadel recorded a two-day total of 1,001 (314-321-366).

Top individual honors went to Richmond's Tracy Martin, who completed the Arnold Palmer Signature Course with scores of 70, 73 and 72 for a 1-under 215. Armstrong Atlantic's Jenna Birch finished in second, two shots off the pace with a 217 (68-74-75, +1).

The Citadel appears in its final tournament of the fall season on Oct. 27 when the team heads to Kiawah Island for the Edward Watt's Intercollegiate hosted by College of Charleston.
