Wofford third at Wendy’s Invitational

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Wofford women’s golf team carded a 310 in the first round and a 294 in the second round of the Wendy’s Invitational at the par-72, 6,021 yard Arnold Palmer Signature Course on Monday.

The Terriers found themselves in seventh place after their opening-round score but vaulted into third place with a 294 in the second round.  Their score was tied for the second-lowest team score in the tournament.

Richmond leads the event with a 587, while host Charleston Southern is in second with a 597.  Wofford’s 604 has it in third, with SoCon opponent App State in fourth with 607.  Armstrong Atlantic rounds out the top five with a 610.

Lauren Dunbar paced the Terriers with a 74-75=149 and is in ninth place.  Anne Marie Covar follows in a tie for 10th place with a 78-72=150, while Maegan Higgins is in a tie for 12th with a 78-73=151.  Alex Hendricks is a tie for 25th with an 80-74=154, while Elizabeth Thompson is in 37th after entering the clubhouse with an 80-78=158.

Shelby Winters, competing as an individual, is in 27th after a 78-77=155.

Wofford wraps up the tournament Tuesday at 9 a.m.

 

Appalachian State third at Wendy’s Invitational

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Appalachian State’s women's golf team concluded the opening day of the CSU Wendy's Invitational on Monday, finishing in fourth place. The Mountaineers tallied a 607 and trail tournament leader Richmond by 20 strokes with play resuming on Tuesday at Rivertowne Country Club.

The Mountaineers were led by senior Rumbidzai Masamvu, who fired matching 73s for a two-round total of 146 (+2). Masamvu's score placed her in sixth in the 75-player field.

Masamvu was followed by sophomore Elena Thomas, who carded a 78-74=151 (+8), and senior Lauren Smith, who finished the day with a 78-74=152 (+8). Both players are tied for 17th in the field.

Rounding out App State's scores, senior Mimi Burke fired a 76-81=157 (+13) and senior Yue Xu notched a 79-81=160 (+16) to close the opening round.

Richmond has the lead going into the final day of the invitational, as the Spiders finished the day with a 587. Host Charleston Southern finished the day in second after carding a 597. Southern Conference foe Wofford finished third, firing a 604, three strokes ahead of the Mountaineers.

Tuesday’s play will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. Appalachian State looks to capture its second straight fall tournament championship after winning the Winthrop Intercollegiate on Oct. 7.

 

Western Carolina sixth at Wendy’s Invitational

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Western Carolina sophomore Maria Kjelldorff carded the lowest individual round of Monday’s opening 36 holes to move into a tie atop the leader board through two rounds of the Wendy’s Invitational, hosted by Charleston Southern at the par-72, 6,021-yard Rivertowne Country Club. As a team, the Catamounts stand in sixth place with a two-round score of 616, just six strokes outside of the top five.

Tied for ninth after shooting an opening-round, 3-over par 75, Kjelldorff carded six birdies, including four on the back nine alone, to post the tournament – and her career-low – round of 5-under 67 during the second 18 holes of the day. Kjelldorff’s round of 67 was one of just two under 70 on Monday, and one of just six rounds turned in under par. The Saltsjobaden, Sweden, native posted 11 pars to go along with her six birdies with just one bogey on her career round.

Kjelldorff is tied with first-round leader Jenna Birch of Armstrong Atlantic, who posted an opening-round 68 before shooting 2-over 74 in the afternoon.

For the Catamounts, true freshman Taylor Allison posted rounds of 77 and 79 to stand in a two-way tie for 28th after the first day. The Elizabeth City, N.C., product posted 11 bogeys, one triple bogey and two birdies among her 22 pars through 36 holes.

Senior Michelle Bello rebounded after an opening-round 84 to shoot 76 in the afternoon to move into a tie for 50th overall (160), followed by freshman Fatima Gonzales-Carriles in a tie for 56th at 162 and classmate Mariah Hopkins tied for 65th at 165.

Richmond posted rounds of 293 and 294 to lead the host Charleston Southern Buccaneers by 10 strokes in the team standings, 587-597. Southern Conference foes Wofford (604) and Appalachian State (607) are third and fourth, respectively, in the team standings with Armstrong Atlantic (610) just ahead of WCU in fifth place.

Paired with golfers from Armstrong Atlantic and archrival Appalachian State, the Catamounts take the course with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Tuesday, beginning on the front nine between holes four and seven.

 

The Citadel in 10^th at Wendy’s Invitational

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Citadel’s women’s golf team is in 10^th place after two rounds of the Wendy’s Invitational hosted by Charleston at Rivertowne Country Club.

The Bulldogs posted a first-round 314 and followed that up with a second-round 321 for a 36-hole total of 635, five strokes behind USC Upstate.

Erica Pellegrini led the way for The Citadel on Monday, firing rounds of 74 and 77 to sit tied for 12^th at 151.
