College of Charleston finishes second, Boehm wins Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif. – The College of Charleston women’s golf team finished runner-up and senior Katharina Boehm earned medalist honors, tying a tournament record at the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday at the Classic Club in Palm Desert.

Three Cougars finished in the top 15 as the team finished in second place at 34-over for the tournament, behind Fresno State at 21-over.

Boehm carded a 75 in the final round to take the tournament title at even-par, a one-shot victory over Madchen Ly of Fresno State. Boehm’s final tournament scorecard included rounds of 73, a career-best 68 and the 75. Boehm’s even-par 216 total tied the tournament record.

Fellow senior Vanessa Koechli carded rounds of 75-72-76=223 (+7) and finished tied for seventh place. Freshman Julia Neumann fired a final-round 74 to finish 11-over for the tournament and tied for 15th place.

Up next, the Cougars return home and host the Palmetto Intercollegiate on Kiawah Island at the Oak Point course, Oct. 28-29.

 

Furman finishes ninth, Wearm second at Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Purdue’s Paula Reto drained a birdie putt at No. 17 and recorded a par on her final hole to edge Furman senior Laura Wearn (-4) by one stroke for individual medalist honors in the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,447-yard Holston Hills Country Club on Sunday afternoon.

Wearn, who entered Sunday’s round with a three-stroke lead on the field at 6-under par, birdied three holes to finish with a 2-over 74 final round and carry the lead into the clubhouse. Reto birdied No. 9 to move to 4-under before completing a 3-under 71 final round with her birdie at the par-5 No. 17.

Furman freshman Stephanie Carlozzi (+4) finished the 54-hole tournament by recording two birdies on the back nine to shoot a 74 and earn a share of 20th place. Sophomore Laura DeMarco, playing as an individual, posted a final-round 75.

Penn State (+3) fired a 287 on Sunday to hold off host Tennessee (+7) for the team title while Purdue (+8) claimed third place. The Paladins (+33) placed ninth in the 16-team Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate field that included six of the top 31 teams in the country and 13 golfers ranked among the nation’s top 100.

Chattanooga finish 14th at Mercedes-Benz Collegiate

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team finished 14th at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate on Sunday at Holston Hills Country Club. Chattanooga shot a final-round 304 for its 54-hole total of 922.

Jordan Britt and Isabella Loza led UTC for its final 18. Each carded two-over par 74s. Britt’s gave her a team-best 222 (+6), which placed her in a tie for 26th.

Emily McLennan and Marion Duvernay were next for the Mocs. Each shot 230. Loza and Mette Kryger, who played as an individual, shot 240, while Porsche Campbell ended up at 246.

Penn State captured the team title, shooting 3-over par 867. That’s four shots better than runner-up Tennessee at 871, while Purdue was third, another shot back with an 872. The Boilermakers’ Paula Reto claimed medalist honors with a final-round 69 providing a final total of 211 (-5).

Chattanooga completes the fall portion of the schedule in two weeks at the Lady Paladin Invitational. The 54-hole event is Oct. 26-28 at Furman Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.
