second at Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate
PALM DESERT, Calif. –
Senior Katharina Boehm carded a 4-under 68 second round to lead the College of
Charleston women’s golf team as it opened play in the Cowgirl Desert
Intercollegiate with 36 holes on Saturday at the Classic Club.
The Cougars opened the tournament with an 11-over 299 and
came back with an 8-over 296 and are 19-over for the tournament. They only
trail Fresno State, who posted rounds of 291 and 289 and are 4-over for the
tournament.
Boehm’s 68 second round is a career best and, combined with
her 1-over 73 first round, puts her at 3-under for the tournament and in second
place.
Fellow senior Vanessa Koechli also had a productive day as
she posted rounds of 75 and 72 and is 3-over for the tournament and tied for
fifth place.
The Cougars will begin play in the final round tomorrow at
10:30 a.m. ET.
Furman seventh, Wearm
leads at Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –
Furman’s Laura Wearn (-6) fired a 4-under par 68 to grab a three-shot lead and
help the Paladins climb into seventh place after round-two action on Saturday
in the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,447-yard Holston Hills Country
Club.
The senior, who started her round at No. 10, used three
birdies to post a 3-under 33 on the back nine before carding a pair of birdies
on the front nine en route to the low round of the weekend. The Charlotte, N.C., native finished with
five birdies, 12 pars and just one bogey on the day to fashion a three-stroke
lead over the University of Tennessee’s Erica Popson (-3) entering Sunday’s
final round.
Furman (+19) climbed from 10th to seventh place with a 7-over
295 on Saturday, the Paladins’ lowest round of the season. Freshman Stephanie Carlozzi (+2) joined Wearn
at par or better with an even-par 72 to climb into a tie for 11th place, while
senior Alexa Rancourt (+10) recovered from an opening-round 79 to notch a
three-over 75.
Penn State (+4) holds a one-stroke lead over second-place
Tennessee and four-stroke lead on third-place Purdue through 36 holes. The 16-team Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate
field includes six of the top 31 teams in the country and 13 golfers ranked
among the nation’s top 100.
Furman will tee off from No. 1 beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday
in final-round play.
Chattanooga in 13th
at Mercedes-Benz Collegiate
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –
Junior Jordan Britt carded an even-par 72 Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz
Collegiate. Britt toured Holston Hills Country Club with two birdies and 14
pars during the second round.
Britt is tied for 21st at 4-over par 148. She is just three
shots out of the top 10. There are seven ladies tied for 11th at 2-over and
three more at plus-3.
Chattanooga is 13th in the event at 618 after Saturday’s
307. UTC is eight shots behind Miami in 12th at 610 and four clear of James
Madison (622) in 14th.
Marion Duvernay shot 74 (+2) for a 7-over par total of 151,
three behind Britt. Emily McLennan is two behind Duvernay at 153, shooting 75
(+3) Saturday with a team-best four birdies.
Penn State holds a slim one-stroke lead over Tennessee, 580
to 581. Purdue moved up two spots to third at 584. Furman’s Laura Wearn is the
individual leader at 6-under par 138. Erica Popson of Tennessee is three back
at 141 (-3).
Sunday’s final round begins at 9:50 a.m. for the Mocs.
Campbell leads off No. 10 with UTC paired with James Madison and Memphis. Loza
(10:00), McLennan (10:10), Duvernay (10:20) and Britt (10:30) follow. Kryger
also starts on 10, just a little earlier in the second group of the round at
9:10 a.m.
