Wofford
4, No. 17 Elon 3 (OT)
ELON,
N.C. – Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez’s hat trick and Nestor Jaramillo’s overtime
winner led the Wofford men’s soccer team to a 4-3 victory over No. 17 Elon on Tuesday
night. Wofford improved to 8-4-0 and 2-0-0 in SoCon play, and Elon dropped to
8-3-1 and 2-1-0 in the conference.
The game would end in the 95th minute, when Dominguez Gonzalez assisted
on Jaramillo’s game-winning goal. Jaramillo controlled the ball outside the 18
yard box on the goalie’s left. Then, he was able to fire a curving shot past
the keeper, off the inside of the far post and in to win the game for the
Terriers.
Wofford opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Alex Hutchins assisted
on Dominguez Gonzalez’s first goal of the season to give the Terriers a 1-0
lead.
The lead would not last long, however, as Elon would equalize in the 34th
minute. Nick Butterly was able to beat Terrier keeper Andrew Drennan with a
header off of James Brace’s corner kick.
Wofford held the edge in shots (8-4) and each team took three corners,
but the half would end with the teams tied 1-1.
In the second half, Elon would take the lead after just nine minutes of
play. Brace fired a shot at Drennan, who was able to make the initial save, but
Matt Wescoe was there to score the off the rebound to give Elon a 2-1 lead.
Dominguez Gonzalez would find the back of the net for his second goal of
the game in 68th minute to tie the score at 2. He was able to head the ball
past Elon keeper Nathan Dean off a long throw-in by Billy Padula that was
flicked on by Connor Davis.
Dominquez Gonzalez would complete the hat trick in the 80th minute, when
Blair Gaines assisted on his third goal to give the Terriers a 3-2 lead with 10
minutes left to play. The lead would be short-lived, as Samuel McBride assisted
on Wescoe’s second goal to tie the score at three.
Regulation would end and the teams would head to overtime tied 3-3.
Drennan earned the victory for Wofford and improved to 8-4-0 this season.
He made three saves on 15 shots. Dean took the loss for Elon and fell to 8-3-1
for the year. He recorded four saves on 13 shots faced.
The Terriers return to the pitch Saturday when they host the Davidson
Wildcats in their SoCon home opener. The match is set to kick off at 7:00 p.m.
at Snyder Field. The Phoenix will travel to Georgia Southern on Friday to take
on the Eagles. That match is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
College
of Charleston 2, UNCG 1 (2OT)
GREENSBORO,
N.C. – Sean de Silva scored 27 seconds into the second overtime period to lift
the College of Charleston men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over UNCG in
Southern Conference play at the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Cougars led 1-0 for the majority of the match but were not deterred
when UNCG equalized seconds before the end of regulation.
After an even, back-and-forth 10-minute first overtime period, de Silva iced
the win for the Cougars with a first-class strike 27 seconds into the second
overtime.
The Cougars (6-7-0, 2-1-0 SoCon) ended the match with a narrow 15-14 shot
advantage after controlling the possession for the majority of the match.
CofC seized the lead in the 11th minute when Daan Brinkman played a ball
into the box to an unmarked Troy Peterson, who scored from the penalty spot.
The Cougars protected their lead for nearly the remainder of regulation,
thanks – in part – to six key saves by Cougar keeper Kees Heemskerk.
UNCG (4-7-2, 2-2-0 SoCon) would equalize late, however, when it rushed
everyone into the box, including Peyton Ford, the Spartan keeper who made five
saves on the evening, in the dying moments of regulation.
Justin Jones sent a long throw-in into the box, where it rattled around
before UNCG’s Hakan Ilhan tapped it back outside the top of the penalty area.
There, Brian Graham took a shot that found the top corner of the net with just
28 seconds left in regulation.
The first overtime period was evenly played but mostly contained in the
central third of the field. Each team managed a shot in the 10-minute period.
Just after the kickoff of the second overtime period, de Silva found some
space through the right-center of the field and drove deep toward the Spartan
goal. About 10 yards outside of the box, De Silva suddenly pulled up his run
and took a left-footed strike that was destined for the upper-right corner of
the net and out of Ford’s reach for the game-winner.
The loss was the Spartans’ second straight in double overtime. UNCG also
fell to Wofford in extra time on Saturday.
The Cougars will now prepare for another test with perennial powerhouse
and defending national champion No. 2 North Carolina. The Tar Heels will be the
eighth team that CofC has played this year that has either been ranked or
receiving votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Coaches Poll.
The Spartans are off this weekend and return to action Tuesday night as
they travel to Georgia Southern in SoCon action. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Furman
3, Clemson 2 (OT)
GREENVILLE,
S.C. – Junior Michael Gandier slipped a shot past Clemson goalkeeper Cody
Mizell in the third minute of overtime to complete Furman’s rally from a
two-goal deficit as the Paladins downed the Tigers, 3-2, before a crowd of
2,509 on Tuesday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.
With Furman on the attack in the opening minutes of overtime, Clemson
scrambled to clear a loose ball out of the box, only to have it fall at the
feet of Gandier just in front of the penalty spot. The Hastings, Minn., native
collected the ball and fired a shot through traffic that found its way into the
right-hand corner at 92:54 to give the Paladins their fourth win in their last
five matches versus Clemson.
The Tigers looked to be headed to victory with a 2-0 lead and less than
10 minutes remaining in regulation when Coleton Henning’s pass found Tony
Santibanez in the box and the freshman was taken down to earn the Paladins a
penalty kick at the 80:18 mark. Martin Ontiveros hammered his shot into the
right side of the net for his seventh goal of the season to slice the Clemson
lead to 2-1.
Just 80 seconds later, Furman’s Kevin Pahl bent a low cross into the box
from deep on the right wing and Walker Zimmerman swept a shot past Mizell with
a sliding effort at the top of the six-yard box for the equalizer to force
overtime.
After being outshot 5-3 by Clemson in the opening 45 minutes, Furman
compiled a 14-2 edge in shots the rest of the way and finished the match with
an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior Doug Ryan notched the victory in goal for Furman with two saves,
while Mizell stopped eight shots in the loss for the Tigers.
Clemson controlled possession in the opening half hour and went in front
at 27:49 on a 50-yard shot from near midfield by Austin Savage. The senior saw
Ryan off his line and lofted a shot over his head and into the center of the
net for his fourth goal of 2012.
In the 30th minute, Savage picked out Preston Gayton with a pass on the
right side of the box, and the freshman placed a shot across the face of goal
that found the far-side netting to double the Tigers’ lead.
The win improved Furman to 9-2-2 on the season while Clemson slipped to
4-7-2. The 3-2 score marked the 10th one-goal game played between the Upstate
rivals in their last 11 matches with the only other match ending in a draw.
Furman continues its four-match homestand on Saturday when it hosts
Appalachian State at Stone Stadium. Kickoff against the Mountaineers is set for
7:30 p.m.
Appalachian
State 0, Georgia Southern 0 (2OT)
BOONE,
N.C. – Appalachian State’s men’s soccer team could not come up with the golden
goal in either overtime period and settled for a 0-0 draw with Southern
Conference foe Georgia Southern on Tuesday night at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
With their second scoreless deadlock of the season, the Mountaineers
moved to 2-6-2 on the year and 0-2-1 in the SoCon. The Eagles went to 2-9-1
overall and 0-1-1 in league play and snapped their eight-game losing streak.
For the third time this season, the Appalachian back line did not give up
a shot on goal and gave up just seven shots for the match. Sophomore goalkeeper
Paul West got his third start in goal and tallied his second shutout of the
season without recording a save. The back line of senior Lee Williams, junior
Walker White, junior Harrison Delbridge and sophomore Patrick Harrow played all
110 minutes and earned the Mountaineers’ sixth shutout of the campaign.
Appalachian found chances up front, but could not capitalize on the few
opportunities that were presented. Sophomore forward Sekani Sinclair led the Mountaineers
in shots on goal with two. His best chance came in the second overtime period
as a through ball from freshman Ewahia Amhanesi found the sprinting Sinclair,
but the sophomore’s shot was just tipped over the bar by GSU goalkeeper Neal
Bates for his fifth save of the night.
Senior Boubacar Toure recorded two shots, sophomore Stanley Broaden
finished the night with three shots and freshman Alex Herbst fired a shot on
goal on a free kick.
The Mountaineers hit the road to face Furman on Saturday in Greenville,
S.C. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Eagles return home on Friday night for the
first night game at Eagle Field as Elon comes to Statesboro for the 7 p.m.
contest under the lights.

Matt Pacifici from 10 yards out for his first goal of the season. Andy Craven
