Charleston, S.C. - Odie Delaney and Richard Alarcon each posted wins by fall to lead The Citadel to a 28-14 victory over Duke at McAlister Field House Friday night. The win was the Bulldogs seventh straight victory over the Blue Devils and second dual meet victory over an ACC member this season.
Delaney scored a pin over the Blue Devils' Andrew Fulk at the 1:30 mark of the 285-pound bout to improve to 9-2 on the season. The six-point win turned an 8-7 deficit into a 13-8 advantage for the Bulldogs.
Alarcon followed suit with a pin on the most exciting contest of the evening, putting the shoulders of Duke's Peter Terrezza to the mat at the 6:27 mark. Terrezza led 4-1 after the first period and 7-3 after two periods, before Alarcon took over in the final stanza. Alarcon started in the bottom position and escaped to cut the deficit to 7-4. Another takedown by Terrezza put the Bulldog down 9-4, but another escape, followed by a takedown of his own gave Alarcon the opportunity to pick up his third pin of the season and put The Citadel up 19-8.
Starting off at 165 pounds, Duke took a 4-0 lead as Ryan Harding scored a 14-2 major decision over Mike Harper. The Bulldogs answered back with a major decision by No. 18 Turtogtokh Luvsandorj at 174 pounds. The junior dominated Randy Roden by a 13-4 score, notching six takedowns in the contest. Duke regained the lead at 8-4 with a 15-6 major decision at 184 pounds by Diego Bencomo. Duke's 2011 NCAA quarterfinalist scored five takedowns in the victory over Jack Duane.
Kelby Smith picked up his 18th win of the season by scoring a 6-2 decision over Brian Self at 197 pounds to cut the deficit to 8-7. Delaney and Alarcon took over at that point, grabbing 12 points before Kyle Casaletto picked up a forfeit at 133 pounds for a 25-8 Bulldog lead.
Duke scored a pair of decision victories at 141 and 149, as Tanner Hough narrowly defeated Jordan Dix 2-1 and AJ Guardado held off David Ivashchenko by a 6-3 score. Pierre Frazile closed out the evening with a 3-2 victory over Immanuel Kerr-Brown at 157, scoring a takedown in the final period to send the Citadel fans in attendance home victorious.
