Davidson’s Pagonis breaks school record in 5,000 meter at Niswonger Invitational
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Junior Demetrios Pagonis opened the Davidson men’s track and field indoor season with a school record-breaking performance in the 5000-meter run, as the Wildcats competed in the Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State University in the Memorial Center Friday and Saturday.

Pagonis placed second in the 5000m in 14 minutes, 34.84 seconds to top the previousDavidson standard of 14:36.29 set by Tom Divinnie at the Southern Conference Championships in 2010.

Senior Ryan Hopkins neared his personal best in the event, turning in a Davidson all-time top-10 performance of 14:48.37 to place behind Pagonis in third. Junior Vincent Weir earned a place on Davidson’s all-time top-10 performers list in the 5000m, placing eighth in 15:07.81.

Sophomore Andrew Lantz won the University/College section of the mile run in a personal–best 4:17.36. The performance ranks in the top five in Wildcat history in the event. Classmate Grayam Sailor-Tynes placed third in the same event in 4:24.13 and Will Mitchell was fifth in 4:28.55.

Lantz also led Davidson in the 800-meter run placing third in 1:59.03.

Sophomore Michael Lorentsen earned a place in the Wildcats’ top-10 performance list in the pole vault after clearing 13 feet, 7 1?4 inches (4.15m). Freshman Tim Hines led Davidson in the long jump with a leap of 20-2 1?2 (6.16m).

On the first day of competition Friday, senior Lee Dorsey completed the 60-meter dash in7.35 seconds, and senior Taylor Martin led Davidson in the 200-meter dash in 23.62 seconds and in the 400-meter dash in 52.27 seconds.

Davidson will next compete at the Kent Taylor Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina on Saturday.

Davidson women open indoor season at Niswonger Invitational
DAVIDSON, N.C. — Led by the duo of Lauren Carter and Grace Watt, the Davidson women’s indoor track and field team had a nice season-opening showing at the Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State on Friday and Saturday.

Carter cruised to a second place finish in the 5000 Meter run as she clocked in at 17:35.05 to pace the Wildcats. Four other ‘Cats competed in the event over the weekend, with Annamarie Armistead following up Carter with a 28th place finish on a time of 20:02.98.

Alex Horst (30th- 20.08.52) was third among the Davidson runners, while Chelsea Gordon (40th place) and Abbey Thibeault (46th) also ran in their first event of the indoor season.

Running to a time of 2:26.45, Watt earned herself a first place finish in the 800 Meter run. Brooke Senken finished in the top-20 with a time of 2:30.83 for 17th place.

Rounding out the weekend was Ali Cobb, who finished 23rd in the Mile run with a time of 5:38.92.

Davidson will next compete at the Kent Taylor Invitational, Feb. 4, on the campus of North Caorlina in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Wofford sets two school records at Clemson Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. – Joe Bailey set the indoor school record in the high jump, and Alissa Williams set the indoor school record In the 3,000m as the Wofford Terriers had six top five finishes in their opening indoor track and field meet at the two-day Clemson Invitational.

Bailey finished the high jump in second place with a height of 1.96m to break the indoor school record, while Williams finished the 3,000m in second place with a time of 10:26.88 to break the previous mark by three seconds.

For the women’s team, Katie Kessler finished just outside the top five in sixth plac with a time of 2:21.38 in the 800m.  Sam Hughes ran a personal best in the 5,000m with a time of 18:32.90 for third place, while Carly Egan just missed the top five with with a sixth place finish crossing the finish line at 19:04.13.  The 4x400m relay team took fifth with a time of 4:09.99.

On the men’s side, Bryan Youman made it into the finals with a time of 7.25 in the prelims of the 60m dash.  He ran a 7.26 in the finals and finished in 11th.  Mavrick Harris finished in fourth place in the 5,000m with a time of 16:23.98, while the 4x400m relay team took third with a time of 3:35.57.

The Terriers will return to the track on February 4 at the Kent Taylor Invitational host by UNC Chapel Hill.

Chattanooga’s Cotter takes fourth in the men’s 3,000 meters at Rod McCravy Memorial 
LEXINGTON, Ky. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Lucas Cotter took fourth in the men’s 3000 meter run Saturday at the Indoor Track and Field Rod McCravy Memorial hosted by the University of Kentucky at Nutter Fieldhouse.
 
Cotter ran a personal record 8:13.18 in the event, just missing senior Chris Berry’s school record by three seconds. Senior Emmanuel Kirwa was 11th in the event with a PR of 8:20.99. Sophomore Mark Cole also ran a PR with a time of 8:37.75.
 
Sohpomore Amanda Sumner was eighth in the women’s 3000 meter finishing with a time of 9:51.41.
 
Junior Joshue Vasquez led three Chattanooga runners in the men’s 800 meter run just missing his PR with a time of 1:56.61 followed by sophomore Drew Austell with a time of 1:56.90. Sophomore John Gilpin was not far behind with a time of 1:58.78.
 
Sophomore Blake Olson ran the 60 meter hurdles for the Mocs with a time of 9.49, just .29 seconds off his personal record. Freshmen Taylor Pannell and Samantha Pulido competed in the women’s 60 meter hurdles. Pannell finished with a time of 10.25 followed by Pulido’s 10.27.
 
The Running Mocs will take the next weekend off and prepare for the Valentine Invitational hosted by Middle Tennessee on Feb. 11 at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Furman freshmen paced the Paladins in opening day of Niswonger Invitational
JOHNSON CITY, TENN. -- Freshman William Ivey finished tenth with a time of 1:57.77 in the 800m invitational event to lead the Furman men’s indoor track and field team Friday evening in the first day of the Niswonger Invitational at Memorial Center in Johnson City, Tenn.  Rookie Danielle Ebzery paced the women’s team, placing 11th with a mark of 10.56 (34-07.75) in the triple jump.

Junior Raul Rodriquez competed in three events for the Paladins, placing 51st in the 60m with a time of 7.44 and 58th in the 200m after recording a time of 23.62.  Rodriquez posted a personal best time of 52.47 in the 400m for 38th place.  Freshman Carson Priest finished 87th in the 200m (24.89), while senior Brian Toney took 92nd place in the event (25.83).  

Sophomore Alexa Wilton placed 52nd in the 200m with a time of 28.02, then turned in a time of 1:04.33 for 35th place in the 400m.  Senior Erin McChristian finished 29th in the 400m after posting a time of 1:06.17.  In the shot put, freshman Gretchen Gabrielson took 31st place with a mark of 9.68 (31-09.25).

The meet will continue on Saturday, beginning with the 5,000m at 8 a.m.  Field events begin at noon with the long jump.

Furman men’s distance medley relay team takes first at Niswonger Invitational
JOHNSON CITY, TENN. -- The Paladin men’s distance medley relay team of James Perez, Raul Rodriquez, William Ivey, and Tripp Hurt took first place with a time of 10:28.17 to lead the Furman indoor track and field teams in the final day of the Niswonger Invitational at Memorial Center in Johnson City, Tenn.

Furman had eight individuals turn in top-10 finishes, including senior Lee Gilmer, who placed second in the mile invitational with a time of 4:12.88, and freshman Tripp Hurt, who finished second in the open mile competition after posting a time of 4:21.57.  Junior Wilkerson Given took eighth place in the mile invitational with a time of 4:191.74.

For the Paladin women’s team, sophomore Catherine Burton finished fourth in the mile invitational with a time of 5:20.06.  In the 3,000m, Furman runners finished back-to-back to back, with freshman Sinead Haughey finishing fourth with a time of 10:05.82, senior Brooke Mosteller placing fifth with a personal-best time of 10:06.62, and senior Erin Barker coming in sixth after recording a time of 10:10.23.

Furman will compete at the Clemson Tiger Paw February 10-11.

Appalachian State women place 14 in top-six at Niswonger Invitational
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Appalachian State women’s track and field put together an impressive performance with 14 top-six finishes at the 34th annual Niswonger Invitational hosted by ETSU this weekend.

On Friday, sophomore Shanquiela Robinson cleared 5-6 in the high jump to take the title while freshman Chelsea Farr cleared 11-11.75 to finish first in the pole vault; and sophomore Cassie Crawford finished in third-place (11-5.75) in the pole vault.

 Junior Erika Ivey earned a runner-up finish (39-3.25) in the triple jump, and in the weight throw sophomore Ana DeLeon threw a third-place finish (54-1.25) in weight throw.

On Saturday, Asia Dunlap, Breahna Morrison, Shenita Martin and Breanna Alston finished in first-place (3:51.83) in the 4x400m relay and were less than six-tenths of a second from breaking the school record. 

In the 200m dash the Mountaineers performed well with junior D’Shawena McLucas earning a fourth-place finish (25.81) while Morrison finished in fifth (25.87) and Kristen Campbell finished in sixth (25.95).

The sophomore from Winston-Salem, N.C., Campbell sprinted a season-best time of 7.90 to take a fifth-place finish in the 60m dash.

In the distance events, junior Amanda Hamilton crossed the finish line in 17:41.72 to finish in fourth-place in 5,000m run while senior Hannah Orders wasn’t far behind her teammate (18:04.51) to finish in sixth-place.  Sophomore Justine Stocks finished in fifth-place in the seeded mile run, while Allison Cook (5:19.37) and Maria Stickley (5:20.73) took first and second, respectively, in the unseeded mile run.  In the 800m run freshman Taryn Stern grabbed a sixth-place finish with a time of 2:27.18.

Freshman Tatyana Bryant leaped 18-3.25 in her collegiate long jumping debut to claim a sixth-place finish.

The Mountaineers travel to University Park, Pa. for the Sykes-Sabock Challege Cup hosted by Penn State on Feb. 4.

Appalachian State men put 16 in top-seven at Niswonger Invitational
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Appalachian State men’s track and field put together an impressive performance with 16 top-seven finishes at the 34th annual Niswonger Invitational hosted by ETSU this weekend.

On Friday, sophomore Jamal Tiller launched himself 50-6 for a season-best to win the triple jump, while sophomore Patrick Hill finished in sixth-place with a season-best 45-1.50.  Junior Jared Stalling earned a fourth-place (60-1.25) finish in the weight throw and claimed the shot put title in a personal-best performance (54-0) on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, the Mountaineers’ distance squad found their groove to place six runners in the top-seven.  Junior Alex Taylor led the way in the 3,000m run with a personal-best time of 8:24.93 to put him sixth all-time in ASU’s record book and to take the meet title, while sophomore Will Raby finished in fourth (8:38.46) and senior Brain Graves in seventh-place (8:44.71).  Senior Chris Moen made his season mile run debut with a first-place finish (4:12.55).  Junior Michael Lilley grabbed a sixth-place finish (15:02.62) in the 5,000m run, and freshman Raphael Rojas took a seventh-place finish in the 800m run (2:01.38).

In the 60m hurdles, senior AJ Dohanic took fifth-place finish (8.29), while freshman Stanley Broaden finished right behind the senior for sixth-place (8.31). David Riddleberger,, Dohanic, Broaden, and Tyler Combs earned a fifth-place finish in the 4x400m relay.

Darius Purcell continued his strong start to the season and claimed the high jump title after clearing 6-10.75, while freshman Daryl Saunders finished in third-place (6-6.75).  Freshman Jacob Stowe made his colliegiate debut and grabbed a fourth-place finish (15-1) in the pole vault. 

The Mountaineers travel to University Park, Pa. for the Sykes-Sabock Challege Cup hosted by Penn State on Feb. 4.                          

Elon completes action at UNC Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Elon track and field team completed action in the UNC Invitational today, Jan. 28, with competitors in eight of the day’s events.
 
The Phoenix turned in several great performances in the 400-meter dash placing three runners in the top six. Amy Salek claimed second with a time of 56.34, while Bria Bell finished right behind in third, clocking a time of 58.20. Veronica Luedke finished in 59.54 to take sixth.
 
Salek (25.74) and Bell (25.79) also finished in the top 10 of the 200-meter dash in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Dana Cataldo clocked a time of 26.28 in the event for 11th.
 
Brennan McDavid, Christine Pacewicz, Ellie Taff and Emily Tryon comprised Elon’s 4x400-meter relay team that finished with a time of 4:31.75.
 
In the one-mile run, Tryon claimed third with a time of 5:14.17. Pacewicz also finished in the top 10 after clocking a time of 5:20.68 for ninth, while McDavid took 14th after finishing in 5:27.88. Jenny Gallagher and Taff completed the 800-meter run with times of 2:28.01 and 2:29.20, respectively, for seventh and eighth.
 
Haley Laird and Jordan Lee finished fourth and fifth in the high jump after both reaching a height of 5’3”. In the triple jump, Luedke claimed fifth with a leap of 35’10”, while Lee jumped a distance of 33’6.5” for seventh.
 
Charlise Morgan was Elon’s top finisher in the shot put with a toss of 39’8.75” for eighth, while a throw of 35’5.75” placed Jennifer Jarvis in 12th.
 
The Elon track and field team will compete next in the Kent Taylor Invitational (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and the Sykes-Sabock Challenge (State College, Pa.) on Saturday, Feb. 4.
