Macnamara Named to NSCAA Men's Soccer Scholar All-South Region Team

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Davidson senior tri-captain Greg Macnamara added yet another postseason accolade as he was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America 2011 University Division Men's Scholar All-South Region Second Team.
Macnamara, a mathematics and economics double major carrying a 3.75 grade point average, led the Wildcats on the pitch and in the classroom, and recently completed his classes at Davidson, graduating a semester early.
The Arlington, Va. native has received several awards for his academic and athletic accomplishments following the 2011 season. Macnamara was named to the Capital One Academic All-America third team by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in early December, drew all-conference athletic and academic honors from the Southern Conference and was also named to the NSCAA's All-South Region team.
Macnamara was one of nine Southern Conference student-athletes to earn a place on thethree All-South Region teams selected.
Furman's Kann Named NSCAA Scholar All-American, Crooks Selected To All-Region Squad
Greenville, S.C. -- Furman goalkeeper Alec Kann has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-America Second Team and midfielder Alex Crooks has been selected to the NSCAA Scholar All-South Region Second Team, it was announced this month.
Kann, a senior who was also named to the NSCAA Scholar All-South First Team, posted a 0.87 goals against average and notched eight shutouts while recording all 14 wins in goal for the Paladins during the 2001 season. The Decatur, Ga., native also a first team All-SoCon and NSCAA All-South Region selection, recorded clean sheets against then nationally-ranked Princeton and East Tennessee State before fashioning a streak of three consecutive shutouts to conclude the regular season against Appalachian State, Davidson and Wofford.
Crooks, a junior, netted three goals and added two assists while helping the Paladins to a 14-4-4 overall record and an NCAA Tournament berth. The Alpharetta, Ga., native notched the game-winning goal versus Jacksonville and scored in a 3-2 triumph at Clemson.
Kann, a sociology major, sports a 3.60 grade point average while Crooks has compiled a 3.38 GPA.
Four Men's Soccer Players Recognized for Academic Excellence
ELON, N.C. - Elon men's soccer senior James Carroll was selected to the 2011 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) University Men's Scholar All-South Region second team, marking the second straight season that Carroll has earned recognition. Phoenix seniors Jahan Threeths, Austen King and Nick Millington also received honorable mention all-south region honors.
Elon, the 2011 Southern Conference Tournament champions, had most representatives of any SoCon institution among the three academic all-region teams with four of the eight honorees.
Carroll, a first-team scholar all-south region selection a year ago, maintained a 3.98 GPA as a computer science and physics major at Elon. The midfielder started nearly every game of his career and recently became just the second Elon men's soccer player to be named to a Capital One Academic All-America team after collecting third team accolades. Carroll was also named to the Academic All-District III first team. He netted two goals, including one in Elon's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance at 11th-ranked Coastal Carolina, and tallied three assists in his final season. Carroll was chosen as one of 25 SoCon student-athletes to receive the Coleman Lew Leadership Award.
King made his second appearance on the scholar all-region team after earning first-team honors last year. The defender, who carries a 3.47 GPA, will graduate with a business administration degree. King scored a goal and helped lead the Phoenix to eight shutouts in 2011.
Threeths and Millington earned their first selections to the scholar all-region teams. Threeths holds a 3.38 GPA as an exercise science major while Millington maintains a 3.50 GPA as a political science major. Threeths earned 16 starts on the Phoenix back line during his final season and tallied an assist. Millington, the SoCon Tournament MVP and second-team all-conference honoree, started all but one contest and netted a goal and added two assists from his midfield position.
Appalachian Men's Soccer's Duffy Honored as Scholar All-South
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Appalachian State men's soccer player Ryan Duffy (Apex, N.C./Apex) has been named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) 2011 University Division Men's Scholar All-South Region Honorable Mention player.
Duffy, a senior studying pre-professional biology with a minor in chemistry, maintained a 3.54 grade point average while serving as team captain last season. He was a critical component of a Mountaineer back line that earned shutouts in 11 contests and held its opponents to only 12 goals in 19 games total. The team ranked sixth nationally in both shutouts and goals-against average.
Duffy's honors add to his previous selections as CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District III Division I first team and academic all-Southern Conference.
Duffy was one of nine SoCon student-athletes to earn recognition as scholar all-South Region.
