Mocs Finish Seventh at Southern Scuffle, Soto Second at 133
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team capped off an outstanding effort at the 2012 Southern Scuffle with five medal winners today. Led by freshman Nick Soto's second place finish at 133, the Mocs surprised the top-notch field with a seventh place finish in the team standings.
UTC's 79 points were just three behind No. 21 Virginia. Chattanooga finished ahead nine other teams ranked in the top-54, including No. 15 Virginia Tech and No. 25 Hofstra.
Soto, a true freshman from Spring Hill, Fla., ended up the star of the tournament for the Mocs. He took on No. 5 and top-seeded David Thorn of Minnesota in the morning semifinals. Neither individual was able to mount much offense and the match remained tied at one after regulation.
In the second overtime, Soto got the crowd of 2,168 on their feet when he scored backpoints to go ahead. Add in another escape and he was able to hang on for a 5-1 decision and advance to the evening finals. It was Soto's second win over a top-5 opponent in the last two weeks. He went on to battle Cristop Dardanes of Minnesota in the finals, but fell 7-2.
"I am definitely going to build on that loss," stated Soto. "Obviously there are still holes in my game. I need to work even harder now in practice. I proved that I can wrestle with the best guys. I have proved it to myself, now I just have to fill in the gaps and get back to the grind."
"It was a good match," stated Eslinger of Soto's effort in the finals. "Obviously we knew that was a tough opponent. That kid was not seeded as high and beat some good guys on his way to the finals. We knew we had our work cut out for us, but it is good. You have to win four of five hard matches to be an All-American or a National Champion and that is Nick's goal. There is no other goal he has."
The Mocs started the day in eighth place and quickly moved up the charts with four wins in four consolation matches. Junior Niko Brown (Kissimmee, Fla.) capped the early streak with his 9-7 victory over Cornell's Jace Bennett at 197.
Seniors Dan Waddell (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Brandon Wright (Germantown, Tenn.) and junior Dean Pavlou (Cleveland, Tenn.) also won at 157, 165 and 149, respectively, to start the day. With Soto in the main draw semifinals, that ensured five Chattanooga wrestlers would place in the event.
Pavlou kept the momentum going with a 7-5 upset over Cornell's 18th-ranked Craig Eifert in the backdraw quarters. Pavlou would go on to finish in sixth place at 149.
Waddell also continued to advance in the 157 bracket, topping Virginia's Matt Stephens 3-2 in the consolation quarters. He advanced to the third place match with a 3-2 win over Cornell's James Vollrath in double-overtime. Waddell would finish fourth overall.
Wright dropped his final two matches but placed eighth at 165. Brown split his final two outings for a seventh place showing at 197.
"I think the team did an excellent job," said Soto. "I think we fed off of each other's energy, which is exactly what we needed. I think our team chemistry made for a better tournament outcome for us. It was definitely a key."
"Our goal was to have multiple placers," continued Eslinger. "We had some things go our way and that was part of it. Sometimes they don't go our way. Dan getting into the medal rounds was big and he needs to get on a roll. Brandon as well. Dean Pavlou had a great tournament and he is not even our starter. Niko Brown had a great tournament and he needs to get better. Again, it is a reflection of what they are doing in practice."
Penn State took the team title with 191.5 points. Minnesota was second with 177.5 while Missouri finished third at 136. Cornell (130) and Oregon State (103) rounded out the top-5. Penn State's David Taylor earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award while Ohio's Ryan Garringer was the Gregorian Award winner for the most falls in the least amount of time.
There is no rest for the weary as the Mocs are right back on the mat this weekend. UTC hosts Cleveland State in a dual meet on Sunday, Jan. 8. Action begins at 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Maclellan Gym. Live scoring will be available, along with live video from MocsVision on GoMocs.com. Tickets are currently available on GoMocs.com.

Appalachian Wrestling Takes Three Places at Southern Scuffle
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - ASU senior Kyle Blevins (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa) defeated a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers to capture third place at 165 pounds, leading Appalachian State wrestling as one of three place-winners during day two of the 2012 Southern Scuffle, hosted by Chattanooga at the McKenzie Arena on Monday. Blevins was joined by classmates Austin Trotman (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) and Mike Kessler (Bay City, Mich./Western) who took fifth and sixth place in their respective classes.
As a squad, Appalachian State finished in eighth place overall, earning 63.5 team points.
No. 20 Blevins began the day with a challenge of top-seeded No. 1 David Taylor of Penn State but suffered a 12-3 major decision loss. In the consolation bracket, the Mountaineer pulled out a narrow 2-0 victory over Nicholas Sulzer of Virginia and closed out the day with a 4-2 decision over Hofstra's No. 3 Paul Gillespie. The win marked the Mountaineers' first victory over a top-10 wrestler this season. Blevins' third-place finish follows his sixth-place Scuffle showing last year, and his 106 career wins are now two short of third place on ASU's all-time list.
No. 10 Trotman opened the day with a semifinal loss to No. 4 Stephen Bosak of Cornell, 7-3. He then suffered a 2-1 loss to No. 8 Kevin Steinhaus of Minnesota. In his fourth-straight bout against a ranked wrestler, Trotman came out on top over No. 15 Luke Rebertus of Navy, earning a 7-3 decision to secure fifth place. With 111 career wins, Trotman is three away from becoming ASU's all-time winningest wrestler.
Kessler began Monday with a 6-2 decision over Indiana's Matt Ortega and followed with a 4:51 pin of No. 15 Mike Nevinger of Cornell-his second win over a ranked wrestler this season. In the consolation semifinal, Kessler was edged by Missouri's Nicholas Hucke, 5-4, and in the fifth-place bout, he fell to Old Dominion's Justin LaValle, 1-4. The preseason all-Southern Conference selection has 20 wins on the season and stands to surpass his career-high of 27 by March.
Senior Savva Kostis (Boone, N.C./Watauga) also competed Monday, but met an early exit on a 4:31 pin by unattached grappler Augustus Sako (Virginia). Junior Brett Boston (Morganton, N.C./Freedom) fell one win short of a spot on the podium, having been eliminated by Navy's No. 18 Aaron Kalil, 12-3.
Appalachian State is back in action later in the week when they travel to face George Mason on Thursday, Jan. 5. The meeting is ASU's first-ever against the Patriots.

Keydets Overcome Slow Start At Mat Town Invite; Brock Finishes Fourth
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - After nearly three weeks away from competition, the VMI wrestling team returned to action and headed to Central Pennsylvania on Thursday, competing at the Mat Town USA Invitational amongst some of the nation's best.
And after a slow start, the Keydets roared back to life, sending three wrestlers to the consolation semifinals in their respective weight classes, including a fourth finish from senior Matthew Brock. This marks the second time in as many tournaments Brock has claimed a spot on the podium.
The one-day tournament was held in the Thomas Fieldhouse at Lock Haven University. In addition the Keydets, the tournament featured some of the top teams in the country, including No. 8 Michigan, No. 9 Pittsburgh and No. 22 Kent State, as well as host Lock Haven, Drexel, Old Dominion, Bloomsburg, Columbia, Sacred Heart and Franklin & Marshall.
It was a tough start for the Keydets, who saw their first action since hosting Campbell University on Dec. 9.
But once the Keydets got going however, they rolled, sending three wrestlers to the quarterfinals of their respective weight classes' consolation brackets; including a pair of consolation semifinal appearances by Brock and Conor Black.
Joseph won his first round match with a 4-2 decision over Kent State's Thaddeus Keklak, but fell in the second round 12-2 versus Pittsburgh's Tyler Wilps.
Brock saw a rematch in the quarterfinals with Franklin & Marshall's Matt Fullowon. The Keydet won his first match with his familiar grind-it-out style 2-0 over Drexel's Ethan Keiser. In the rematch, Fullowan narrowly edge Brock 3-1, splitting the season results 1-1. Brock won the dual match 3-2 earlier this season.
After being sent to the consolation brackets, the two fared well, each reaching the quarterfinals. Joseph picked up a first-round pin in the third round, putting Tommy Sasfy on his back at the 2:05 mark. Joesph's afternoon was cut short in the fourth round however, falling 8-2 to David Johnson.
Another consolation semifinalist, Conor Black dropped his first match 5-3 to Pittsburgh's Karl Declantis 5-3, setting the stage for a rematch later in the day. Black rattled off three straight wins, including a 9-2 decision over Lock Haven's Zachary Heffner and pinning Sam Shirey of Bloomsburg. Black fell in the consolation semifinals to Declantis in a tight 3-2 decision.
The Keydets return to action next week, making the trek to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the Pitt Duals. The Keydets will be joined at the Fitzgerald Field House by Eastern Michigan, and Ivy League contenders Princeton and Columbia.
