UNCG's Sumney, Samford's Allen Named Women's Athletes of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG junior Shaina Sumney and Samford junior Emily Allen have been named the Southern Conference’s Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over the weekend. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.

Sumney, a Washington, Pa., native posted a 9:49 time in the 3000m at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., which leads the league by four seconds this season. Her time was also a new personal best by 35 seconds. 

In her first year throwing the 35-lbs. weight, Allen had a 15.62m throw at the Auburn Invite, taking the conference lead. 

UNCG will not be back in action until Feb.3 where they will compete in the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Samford will co-host a midweek invitational with Birmingham Southern and UAB beginning on Wednesday at the new Birmingham Crossplex.

Other top performers this week included: 

The Citadel junior Micah Wessinger – Wessinger won the 600m race at the Captain’s Invitational at Christopher Newport in a time of 1:38.18. She was also the lead leg of the school record 4x800 and 4x400 relays.

Georgia Southern junior Jasmine Billings – Billings finished eighth in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.14 at the Gator Invitational.

Samford junior Holly Benson—Benson ran a 4:54.59 in the mile at the Auburn Invite, moving into third all-time in Samford history.
