UNCG's Chelimo, Samford's Kirby Named Men's Athletes of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG sophomore Paul Chelimo and Samford senior Kyle Kirby have been named the Southern Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over the weekend. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.

Chelimo won the mile at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., with a conference-leading time of 4:08. The Kenyan native broke his personal best and the UNCG school record with his performance.

Kirby’s weight throw of 19.68m was only one half inch behind first place at the Auburn Invite, beating his own record and ranking him 18th in the country. 

UNCG will not be back in action until Feb.3 where they will compete in the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Samford will co-host a midweek invitational with Birmingham Southern and UAB beginning on Wednesday at the new Birmingham Crossplex.
