COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the University of South Carolina Saturday afternoon at the USC Indoor Facility in the opening match of the 2012 season for the Terriers.
The Gamecocks improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Terriers fall to 0-1 overall.
South Carolina took an early advantage, claiming all three doubles matches to seize the doubles point.
In singles action, senior Tinus Van Wyk took on South Carolina's Ivan Machado at the No. 1 position, giving Machado all he could handle in the two sets, but fell 6-3, 6-4. The Gamecocks took all the remaining singles matches in straight sets to complete the 7-0 win.
Wofford will return to action on Friday, January 27th, as they travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to face Winthrop. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start time.
South Carolina 7, Appalachian State 0
COLUMBIA, S.C. - In the team's second outing of the season, Appalachian State University men's tennis was shutout by non-conference opponent South Carolina at the USC Indoor Facility on Saturday. The Mountaineers (0-2) challenged their SEC opponent but were unable to secure a team point against the Gamecocks (1-0).
Appalachian's only win of the day came at No. 2 doubles, as Alex Markov and Sebastien King pulled out a 9-7 victory over Ivan Machado and Thiago Pinheiro.
ASU's top pair of Philip Kloc and Alain Humblet, ranked No. 8 in the Carolina region, fought tough against South Carolina's Nick Jones and Kyle Koch, but the Gamecock duo pulled out the 9-7 win on its home court.
Ranked No. 14 in the region, Jones pulled out a two-set victory over Markov in the top singles spot, while Machado, ranked No. 17 in the Carolinas, was dominant at No. 2 singles.
After two grueling matches to open the season, the Mountaineers return home to host UNC Asheville at Deer Valley Racquet Club on Sun., Jan 29 at 3 p.m.

South Alabama 7, Furman 0
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Furman men's tennis team dropped two matches in a tournament delayed by heavy fog Saturday in Tallahasee, Fla. UAB handed the Paladins a 4-1 loss Saturday morning, before South Alabama blanked Furman, 7-0, Saturday evening.
In the morning match, Danny Manlow and Daniel Moser gave the Blazers an early lead in doubles with an 8-2 win over sophomores Nate Collins and Joel Cook in the number two doubles match-up. Paladin junior Andrew Mellow and freshman Jacob Behal then notched an 8-6 win over David Zimmerman and Tom Puetz in the top doubles contest to knot the doubles at one apiece, before Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar came away with a 9-8(5) win over Furman junior Tyler Droll and senior Watson George at number three doubles to win the doubles point.
Mellow put the Paladins on the board with a 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Zimmerman in the top singles match, but the Blazers answered with three singles victories to put the match out of reach. Manlow bested Cook, 6-2, 6-4, at number two singles, and Helliar defeated Behal, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the third singles contest. At number four singles, Moser posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over junior Robbie Aru.
The number five and six matches were unfinished, with Droll leading Dirube, 7-6, 3-6, 2-1, at number five, and Puetz and freshman Ryan Miller deadlocked at 5-5 in the third set at number six. Puetz took set one, 6-1, before Miller forced a third set with a 6-3 win in set two.
In the evening match, South Alabama swept the doubles and singles matches for a 7-0 win. Hanno Bartsch and Romain Bocaert defeated Mellow and Behal, 8-2, in the top doubles match, and Cody Hall and Christian Kuehne teamed up for an 8-1 win over Collins and Cook at number two doubles. Alex Bernard and Daniel Leitner beat Droll and George, 8-7(0), in the third doubles contest.
Bocaert handed Mellow a 6-3, 7-5 loss at number one singles, and Bernard defeated Cook, 7-6(3), 6-1, in the second singles contest. Leitner posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Behal at number three singles, while Hall defeated Droll, 6-1, 6-2 at number four.
In the fifth singles matchup, Dauw Kruger notched a 6-0, 7-6(1) win over Collins, and Blake Gregor defeated sophomore Sven Ivankovic, 7-5, 6-4 at number six singles.
Furman (0-3) will face #44 Florida State Sunday at noon.
