Appalachian State women earned 11 top-two finishes at Appalachian Split Meet
BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women’s track and field solid performance earned them 11 top-two finishers at the Appalachian Split Open Meet Thursday night to help prepare the squad for the 30-plus team meet next week at ETSU.
The Mountaineers' sprinters performed very well with sophomore Kristen Campbell claiming the 55-meter dash title (7.36), while fellow sophomore Breanna Alston won the 300-meter dash (40.10) and junior Shenita Martin finished in second (42.05) in the 300-meter dash.
Sophomore Breahna Morrison crossed the finish line in 59.97 to win the 400-meter dash. Sophomore Molly Vaughan earned a second-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.57.
In the field events freshman Sydney Cook skied over 11-0.25 to claim the pole vault title, while junior Meredith Wilson finished runner-up. Freshman Janet Watson made her collegiate debut with a second-place finish in the high jump clearing 5-3.25.
In the throw events sophomore Ana DeLeon finished first in the weight throw for the second-straight week (48-6.25) while fellow sophomore Jocelyn Parnell finished runner-up with a 48-2.75 throw. Freshman Jasmine Suydam earned second-place (38-8.25) in the shot put.
Appalachian’s next meet takes place at the ETSU Invitational on January 27 at Johnson City, Tenn.

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University men’s track and field solid performance earned them 10 top-three finishers at the Appalachian Split Meet Open Thursday night to help prepare the squad for the 30-plus team meet next week at ETSU.
The Mountaineers’ sprinters performed very well with junior Landon Powell earned a second-place finish (34.75) while freshman Stanley Broaden finished third (35.75) in the 300-meter dash. Junior Justin Thomas and senior AJ Dohanic tied for third in the 55-meter dash with the times of 6.56. Dohanic used his momentum for the 55-meter dash to excell in the 55-meter hurdles with the meets top time of 7.67. Broaden earned runner-up with a time of 7.70 in the 55-meter hurdles.
Junior Michael Lilley earned a runner-up finish in the 3,000-meter run crossing the finish line 8:56.35.
In the field events junior Jared Stalling threw a meet best 52-7.25 to win the shot put, while senior Caleb Poplin finished in second-place (53-8.50) in the weight throw. Senior Jack Bell tied for third place in the pole vault after clearing 14-1.25.
Appalachian’s next meet takes place at the ETSU Invitational on January 27 at Johnson City, Tenn.
Western Carolina’s Hairston broke 300m dash record at Appalachian Split Meet
BOONE, N.C.—Western Carolina junior Brandon Hairston moved into the Catamount record book with a 300m dash time of 34.62 at the 2012 Appalachian Split Meet Open on the campus of rival Appalachian State.
Hairston’s record bested the 300m record previously held by Joe Hyman (34.73) set back in 1999. All told, WCU finished with 50 top-five finishes and 14 overall wins.
The Catamounts competed well on the track winning the men’s 55m, 400m and 500m races. In the 55m dash, junior Willie Bowman picked up his first win in the event with a time of 6.47. Brandon Hairston and Benny Davis ran in the event for the first time as Hairston finished second with a time of 6.51 while Davis came in fifth (6.59).
WCU won the top-three spots in the 400m with Aaron Tribble winning in 49.77. Demari Boswell (50.05) and Ammar Phillips (50.83) rounded out the top-three. A similar situation occurred in the 500m with Aaron Harris (1:06.22), Tyler Bentley (1:11.08), Marquis Bailey (1:11.25) and Abraham Faison (1:11.91) took the top-four spots.
On the women’s side, Catamounts filled the top ten in the 55m dash. Raven Parrish and Janise Robinson tied for the top spot in the event as both finished second with matching times of 7.38. Shiniqua Pryor (fifth, 7.43), Felisha Garren (sixth, 7.49) and Taylor Feimster (eighth, 7.52) all claimed top ten spots.
Robinson and Feimster finished one and two in the 200m dash with Robinson winning in 26.25. Four of the top-five finishers in the 500m wore Purple and Gold with freshman Lena Elliott winning the event in 1:16.97. Classmate Genevieve Emrick took second with a time of 1:18.00.
Murertown, Va.-native Mara Smith claimed the top spot in the 3000m run with a personal best time of 10:35.65. Smith was followed by teammates Olivia Jacobs (10:48.35) and Aleshia Reese (10:49.13).
Picking up her first win of her career was freshman Xaviera Bass in the 55-meter hurdles. Bass crossed the line in 8.48. Classmate Alisha Bradshaw also picked up her first victory in the shot put with a personal best throw of 12.02m.
Next weekend the Catamounts will return to action in the Niswonger Invitational with the meet beginning on Friday, Jan. 27.
