Excerpt From the Article... Our first Where Are They Now feature focused on former Chattanooga runner, Mary Jane Middelkoop. A stand-out distance runner for the Mocs, Middelkoop finished her career with numerous All-Conference honors. Her focus on the track was only surmounted by her determination in the classroom. Middelkoop was awarded Chattanooga's A.C. "Scrappy" Moore Award, given to the UTC student-athlete who best personifies the athletic department's vision of "success with integrity" through academic achievement and community service.

Excerpt From the Interview... You mentioned your Citadel ring. Can you talk a little bit about what that means to you personally and the significance of it to the school? Inside my ring I actually put my own name and "keep the faith." Those are the only things that are actually different about my ring from my classmates' rings. We all have the same ring and I think that's what means so much. That it just shows we all come from this same mold and we've all gone through the same thing, and we're all hopefully wearing it well and accomplishing a lot. |

Excerpt From the Interview... You played two sports at Furman. How was balancing being a student and an athlete more challenging for you? In the end, it ended up being better because I stayed busier and I think I'm more productive when I'm busy. I loved going from class to practice, to the training room, and then going back and studying for a test or writing a paper. It was just a challenge, the challenge of my life up to this point, and it was exhausting. I slept for about six months after I graduated trying to catch up, but I would do it all over again. It was fantastic. |

Excerpt From the Interview... What is one thing that sticks out to you from your time at Davidson? I would say when the team won the conference tournament my junior year. It was amazing, we were undefeated in the conference that season and it was just a really fun group, we all just got along so well. The juniors, seniors and sophomores were really close. We won conference and I will never forget that moment. I still have the picture blown-up poster size where we are holding our fingers up saying 'We are #1!' and holding the trophy... We worked so hard all season and for us to just enjoy that the way we did as friends, it was really special. |

Excerpt From the Article... Along with gaining the hands-on experience, working at the conference office also teaches you how to communicate with administrators and how making a good first impression is important.
"Understand that every opportunity that you have to interact with administrators throughout the conference when we have meetings you can take advantage of networking," said Sanker. "Take as many opportunities as you can to learn what all the different jobs are that go into college athletics."

Excerpt From the Interview... What advice would you give to current student-athletes? It's something my coach always said, 'always realize that you're on stage.' When people are watching or not watching, you're always on stage. The best you can do is invest in others and when you invest in others, you're also investing in yourself... Just capitalize on the opportunity and while you're doing all that, have fun. Have the most fun that you can because when the real world stares you in the face, it's a totally different ball game... Enjoy the experience, take time to invest in others and just don't take shortcuts. |

Excerpt From the Interview... Do you still follow UNCG basketball? I do. I actually went back when Coach Agee had the floor dedicated to her, which meant a ton. I think this past year I've been a part of the athletics at UNCG more than I have as an alumna thus far. Of course I miss coach Agee, but now we got a new coach and it's been interesting watching her work. It's just a new era with a new athletic director and things are changing, but it's a lot of fun to watch and I try to make it out whenever I can. I'm always a Spartan. |
