WILMINGTON, N.C. - In the team's first match of the 2012 season, Appalachian State University men's tennis fell to No. 43 UNC Wilmington by a 6-1 margin on Thursday at the UNCW Tennis Complex. The Mountaineers (0-1) managed wins in one singles and one doubles match, while the nationally-ranked Seahawks (1-0) triumphed.

Appalachian seniors Philip Kloc and Alain Humblet,  ranked No. 8 in the Carolina region, were successful at the top doubles spot, defeating Kosta Blank and Chris Cooprider, 8-6.

After UNCW took the third doubles match, the pairs point came down to Sebastien King and Alex Markov at second doubles. Though the Apps managed to force a tiebreaker, UNCW won the tiebreaker by a 7-3 margin.

In singles, Humblet took the point at No. 3 singles, edging Pedro Mol with a 6-4, 7-6(7-5) win. Steve Karendal took his opponent to three sets at No. 5 singles but fell short, 1-6, 6-1, 4-6.

Appalachian returns to action for a match against South Carolina on Saturday. The Mountaineers are set to face the Gamecocks at 10 a.m. in Columbia, S.C.
