SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG senior Ashley Schnell and Samford sophomore Claire Goodson have been named the Southern Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over the weekend. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.
Schnell, a Lincoln, Neb., native won the 800 meter race at the Dick Taylor Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina. The redshirt senior’s time of 2:11.52 was nearly six seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Schnell’s time also broke the school record, which she set last season at the Tiger Paw Invitational.
Goodson won the UAB Blazer Invite Friday with a personal best of 12’ 5.5” in the pole vault. The Alpharetta, Ga., native turned around and recorded a new personal best vault of 12’ 11.5” the following day at the Crimson Tide Opener.
UNCG will compete in the Hokie Invitational this weekend in Blacksburg, Va., while Samford competes in the Auburn Invite.
Other top performers this week included:
Furman senior Erin Barker – Barker ran a 4:57.62 mile, breaking her own school record, at the Dick Taylor Invitational.
Appalachian State junior Sarah Williamson – Williamson ran the 5,000 meters in 18:07.25, which is a personal best. She leads the conference.
Georgia Southern freshman Sarah Hall – Hall threw the shot-put 43’11.25 inches at the UAB Blazer Invite.
College of Charleston freshman Tiffany Sisk – Sisk threw a school record 42’7 inches in the shot put at Dick Taylor Invitational.
