UNCG men 15th, women 27th at Paul Short Invitational
BETHLEHAM, Pa. - UNCG sophomore Paul Chelimo led from wire-to-wire on Friday as he took top individual honors in the men's race and Ashley Schnell turned in a top-15 performance for the women at the Paul Short Run.
In a race that saw seven top-25 programs nationally, Chelimo took off from the beginning to win the men's race with a time of 23:55. Although his time was 15 seconds off his school record he set two weeks ago, his time was more than enough for the win as he finished 17 seconds ahead of second place.
Paul Katam (51st), Joey Thompson (66th) and Abraham Kemboi (88th) also had nice runs for the men as they all turned in top-100 finishes.
Schnell paced the women's team once again as she completed the 6k course in a time of 20:58 to finish in 15th place overall out of just under 400 runners. Her time was just 10 seconds off of the school record she set last year at the NCAA Regionals where she earned All-Region accolades.
Western Carolina men 42nd, women 43rd at Paul Short Invitational
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The men's and women's cross country teams competed in the prestigious 38thannual Paul Short Invitational Friday in Bethlehem, Pa., hosted by Lehigh University. The men's team finished 42nd while the women's team placed 43rd.
Junior Nolan Clark paced the Catamount in the men's 8K with a time of 26:09, finishing 204 overall. The Gainesville, Ga.-native has been WCU's top finisher in all three meets this season. Sophomore Chase Fisher finished just behind Clark, crossing in 26:15.
Freshmen classmates Travis Alfaro and Jacob Englert crossed the finish line in 27:20 and 27:29, respectively. Jake Swimmer and Garrett West rounded out the WCU runners, taking 381st and 383rd places with times of 28:14 and 28:17.
In the women's 6K, Morgan Turner placed 148th out of 396 participants, crossing the line in 22:38. Juniors Mara Smith (23:33, 268th place) and Olivia Jacobs (24:19, 338) followed Turner as WCU's top finishers.
The final four runners for the Catamounts ran personal bests and made WCU's all-time top 30 list for the women's 6K event. Michelle Provost (24:20) moved into 23rd place, with Kaylan Lance (24:44) in 26th, Aleisha Reese (25:06) in 28th and Faith Trammell (25:21) in 30th.
Appalachian State women 34th, men 36th at Paul Short Invitational
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Appalachian State University men's cross country made a strong overall showing at the 38th annual Brooks-Paul Short Run on Friday.
The Mountaineers competed against 45 teams on Lehigh's Goodman Campus Course and finished 36th overall in the 8k race.
The meet featured eight of the Top 25 teams, including No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 Iona, No. 12 Princeton, No. 15 Syracuse, No. 17 Providence, No. 18 Villanova, No. 19 Virginia and No. 22 Georgetown.
Senior Nick Kelly led the way for the Mountaineers with a time of 26:03 and placed 174th out of the 402 runners. Junior Alex Taylor crossed the finish line a second behind Kelly to take 175th-place.
Junior Michael Lilley finished with a time of 26:19, while redshirt-sophomore James Howard-Smith and freshman Chris Garrett finished with the time of 26:35 and 26:36 respectively to round out Appalachian's top five performers.
Junior Charles Wofford crossed the finish line with a time of 26:42, while senior Chris Moen finished with the time 26:52.
Fourth-ranked Oklahoma took the title with four runners finishing in the top-10 overall for a total of 34 points, and followed by No. 22 Georgetown with 143 points.

The meet featured seven of the top-25 teams in the country, including four teams in the top-10, No. 1 Georgetown, No. 3 Providence, No. 5 Villanova and No. 9 Duke.
Junior Amanda Hamilton led the way for the Mountaineers for the second-straight week with a time of 22:33 and placed 126th out of the 396 runners. Senior Hannah Orders crossed the finish line with a time of 22:55, while sophomore Allison Cook and junior Sarah Williamson finished together clocking in at 23:07 and 23:09 respectively. Redshirt-freshman Justine Stocks ran a time of 23:20, followed by fellow redshirt-freshman Kayla Schneider (23:30). Junior Kaitlyn Cagle rounded out the squad clocking in at 23:45.
The 3rd-ranked Providence College claimed the title with a score of 101 points, which was three points better than the second-place team, BIG EAST rival and defending national champions, Villanova (104).
Furman women second, men fifth at Charlotte Invitational
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Furman women's cross country team placed second with 127 points at the Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C., Friday night, while the Paladins took fifth place in the men's meet with 170 points. Virginia Tech won both meets, notching 35 points in the men's 8K race and 84 points on the women's 5K course.
Senior Erin Barker recorded a time of 17:30.45 to place ninth and pace the Paladin women. For the third consecutive meet, senior Brooke Mosteller and freshman Sinead Haughey turned in back-to-back finishes. Mosteller placed 14th with a time of 17:38.62, followed by Haughey in 15th place with a time of 17:39.62. Senior Chloe Kowalski finished 53rd with a time of 18:29.30, while sophomore Kacie Shoen notched a time of 18:35.71 for 60th place. Freshman Emily Zizzi finished the race in 19:36.28 to take 129th place, while junior Hannah Robinson rounded out the Paladin racers with a time of 19:38.97 to place 131st.
Senior Lee Gilmer led the Furman men's team for the third consecutive meet, placing eleventh with a time of 24:41.90, followed by fellow senior Chris Caldwell, who placed 33rd with a time of 25:18.11. Freshman Tripp Hurt took 37th place with a time of 25:22.26, followed by junior Wilkerson Given in 38th place with a time of 25:22.43. Sophomore Jack Klecker recorded an 82nd-place finish (26:30.82), and sophomore Tyler Greathouse placed 84th with a time of 26:32.90. Rookie William Ivey recorded a time of 27:49.36 for 165th place to complete the Paladin slate of runners.
Elon women fifth, men 15th at Charlotte Invitational
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Elon men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Charlotte Invitational today, Sept. 30, finishing 15th and fifth, respectively. Sophomore Allyson Oram set a new Elon record with a time of 17:45.85 as the women added three new times to the Elon all-time performance list.
Oram took 21st out of the 289 competitors in the women's race with her record time, while sophomore Morgan Denecke set a new personal best of 17:54.00 for 27th that ranks second on the performance list. Freshman Haylee Dawe now owns the fourth-best Elon time after recording a time of 18:04.03 to claim 33rd, her third-straight meet with a new personal record. Junior Emily Tryon finished in 18:27.02, while junior Christine Pacewicz set a new personal best of 18:47.32. Sophomores Amanda Parker and Brennan McDavid rounded out Race A for the Phoenix after recording times of 19:18.96 and 19:21.56, respectively.
In the men's race, freshman Ari Rothschild was the top Elon finisher in 65th with a personal-best time of 26:03.57. Freshman Adam Bernstein took 91st out of the 260 runners with a time of 26:35.58, a new personal record. Senior Clay Sankey finished in 26:44.41, while sophomore Ben Perron recorded a time of 26:49.39. Senior Conor O'Brien and junior Ranley Gousse were the fifth and sixth Elon finishers in Race A with times of 27:06.50 and 27:33.46, respectively.
College of Charleston men 10th, women 12th at Charlotte Invitational
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - In just the second race of her cross country season sophomore Dena O'Brien came out strong as she ran with the lead pack most of the race and finished fourth, her time of 17:11.75 a new CofC school record Friday at the Charlotte Invitational.
O'Brien helped the women's team to a 12th place finish out of 36 teams. The men's squad finished 10th out of 34 teams.
O'Brien's time bettered the previous record of 17:34, set by Micky Kawohl in the 1991 season.
Sophomores McKenna Nokes and Danielle Hobbs set career bests as Nokes ran 18:47.30 and Hobbs bettered her previous best by 18 seconds, crossing the finish line in 19:01.69.
On the men's side sophomore Andrew Nelson led the team as he finished 50th in 25:47.78. Senior David Lamberson bested his career mark by 12 seconds as he finished in 25:57.45.
Wofford women 14th, men 25th at Charlotte Invitational
CHARLOTTLE, N.C. -- Alissa Williams broke the school record as the Wofford women's cross country team finished in 14th place at the Charlotte Invite, while the men's team took 25th Friday night.
Williams led the women's team in 58th place with a time of 18:33.41 shattering the Wofford school record by six seconds. She now owns the top two spots all-time for the Terriers after breaking the record in the team's last meet two weeks ago. Alyssa Burket ran a personal best 18:48.94 for 77th place. Carly Egan followed closely behind with a time of 18:51.75 to finish in 81st place, and Katie Kessler finished just outside the top 100 with a time of 19:23.56. Sam Hughes trailed by a minute, 19:24.25, to complete the Terriers top five runners. The Terriers scorers all finished in the top half of the 289-runner-meet.
On the men's side, Trey Parker finished with a time of 26:39.38 in 95th place, while Russell Baker ran a 27:37.95. Matt Menard crossed the finish line with a time of 27:45.41, and Justin Whitaker notched a time of 27:51.88. Mavrick Harris finished with a time of 27:59.51 to wrap up the Terriers top five.
Georgia Southern 22nd at Charlotte Invitational
Charlotte, N.C. - Georgia Southern Cross Country placed twenty-second at the Charlotte Invitational Friday afternoon, led by junior Sarah Curry who placed 79th overall in a field of nearly 300 runners. Curry's time of 18:49.66 broke her previous personal best time set at Charlotte in 2010 and was the fourth-best time in Georgia Southern history for the 5K.
Freshmen Rebecca and Rachel Greenwall were the second and third Eagles to cross the finish line, placing 103rd and 175th, respectively. Brittani Martin and Megan Sullivan rounded out the scoring for the Eagles.
Virginia Tech placed five runners inside the top-20 to bring home the title at historic McAlpine Park.
Chattanooga women third at Tennessee Tech Invitational
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's cross country team finished third Friday night at the Tennessee Tech Invitational.
Senior Tara Gietema led four Lady Mocs in the Top 11 with a fourth place finish overall. She ran the 5-kilometer course in a time of 19:56.14. Sophomore was the second UTC runner across the finish line placing sixth overall with a time of 20:14.35. Fifth-year senior Sarah White-Woerner was eighth with a time of 20:32.49 while freshman Keeley Stewart placed 11th for Chattanooga.
Of the five runners Friday evening, Gietema is the only one with experience to speak of. The graduate student is running her fourth year while Buchanan finished just her fourth collegiate race.
The Lady Mocs were edged by host Tennessee Tech by just one point, 49-50. Jacksonville State swept the top three spots and won the race with 27 points.
