SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- UNCG's Ariel Newman has been named the Southern Conference's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week. College of Charleston's Elyse Chubb was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week, while teammate Sloane White garnered Freshman of the Week for the week of September 26, the league office announced today.
Newman helped the Spartans finish the week 3-0. UNCG traveled to North Carolina A&T during a midweek game where Newman had a .364 hitting percentage in the Spartans sweep of the Aggies.
The outside hitter recorded a match-high 21 kills against Elon Friday and finished with a double-double in that match with 15 digs. In the match against, The Citadel, the Greensboro, N.C. native led the Spartans offensively with a match-high 11 kills.
Chubb tallied a season-best 14 blocks against The Citadel Friday. The middle blocker led the Cougars with five total blocks in their sweep against Elon.
The Peachtree, Ga. native is currently ranked in the Top 10 in College of Charleston history in kills (1,033) and Top 5 in total blocks (437).
White, who was named the Freshman of the Week for the week for September 12, led the Cougars in kills overall last week. The middle blocker from Indianapolis tallied 11 kills against Charleston Southern and 14 against The Citadel. In the College of Charleston's three matches, White totaled 34 kills, averaging 3.40 per set.
The redshirt freshman also dug out four balls last week and recorded 10 total blocks.

Nominated for Defensive Player of the Week were Alison Blasingame (Appalachian State), Rachael Farrell (The Citadel), Molly Crenshaw (Davidson), Natalie Braun (Furman), Lauren LaRocque (Georgia Southern), Kellie Orewiler (UNCG), Alexis Bauer (Samford), and Reagan Styles (Wofford).
Nominated for Freshmen of the Week were Amanda Rudnik (The Citadel), Jamie DeRatt (Georgia Southern), Holland Hoefnagel (UNCG), Caitlin Piechota (Western Carolina), and Kelly Bagwell (Wofford).
