Western Carolina 3, Chattanooga 1
CULLOWHEE, N.C.--After dropping the first set, Western Carolina came back to win three straight, topping the Lady Mocs, 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-20) picking up its first conference win. The win was the sixth of the season for the Catamounts (6-10, 1-0) - their second straight at home - matching the win total for all of the 2010 season. Chattanooga falls to 2-12 (0-1) on the season.
Even though the Lady Mocs totaled more kills, assists and digs, the Catamounts outblocked Chattanooga as a team, 15.0-4.0. The total is the most for the Catamounts this season. Western Carolina had three players over four total blocks with Rebecca Stoltz leading the way with seven total blocks. Junior Abbey Scroggins logged six total blocks while Carrie Minogue had five.
Chattanooga came away with the first set behind solid offensive play. WCU hit a match low .143 in the first set.
After being behind 20-13 in the second set, WCU went on a 6-0 run behind the serve of Jordan Timmermann. The three seniors - Carrie Minogue, Brittany Lysik and Rebecca Stoltz - then came away with three consecutive kills to give the Catamounts a 22-21 lead that would eventually even the match up at two sets apiece.
Set three began close as both teams stayed within a couple of points of each other. After taking a 13-12 lead - the Catamounts' first of the set - WCU went on to win the set 25-18. The Catamounts never trailed again in the match, finishing off the Lady Mocs, 25-20.
Aside from Minogue's five total blocks, the senior led the way offensively for Western Carolina with 12 kills. She also added two assists, two aces and two digs. Brittany Lysik dished out 33 assists en route to another double-double, adding 10 digs to the winning effort. Sophomore libero Morgan Cochran also returned to the court after missing several games due to illness. Cochran notched 16 digs in her first match back.
Davidson 3, Wofford 2
DAVIDSON, N.C.- After winning the first set, Davidson (11-4, 1-1 SoCon) had to fight back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Wofford (10-6, 0-2 SoCon). Senior outside hitter Christine Perzinskifinished with 13 kills and sophomore middle hitter Taylor Pisel added a career-high 12. Making her first career start in junior setter Ariel Ley's absence, freshman Anastasia Owen finished with 48 assists, eight digs and a block. Junior libero Molly Crenshaw led all players with 24 digs, and Brown and Perzinski both finished with double-doubles with 14 and 16 digs, respectively.
Rachel Woodlee led the Terriers with 14 kills and 10 digs, and Arden Anderson and Amanda Liguori each finished with 11 kills. Bekah Dorsey tallied 45 assists, and Reagan Styles paced the defense with 16 digs.
With the first set tied at 13, Davidson took control of the back-and-forth frame with a 6-2 run, including a pair of kills by Brown, to open a 19-15 lead. Wofford won three of the next five points, but back-to-back kills by Pisel and Brown followed by an ace from sophomore defensive specialist Jenna Ptaschinski pushed Davidson's lead to 24-18, enough for the 25-20 win.
The second set was tied at 10 when Wofford took a 20-12 lead behind a 10-2 run. The teams traded points over the next eight possessions, but the lead proved too great to overcome as Woodlee and Liguori scored two straight points and evened the match for the Terriers with the 25-16 win.
The third set was decided in extra points after Davidson lost an early 10-6 lead. Trailing 15-14, the Wildcats put together a 5-0 stretch punctuated by a pair of Perzinski aces to go ahead, 19-15. But the Terriers kept attacking and tied the set at 23 on a kill by Anderson. Davidson had a set point on a Wofford service error by Styles but extended play with its own error. Liguori's kill gave Wofford got a set point but she followed with an error. A kill by Sewell put Davidson in charge, 26-25, but Dorsey knotted the score again. Brown put away a pass from junior Erin Lupfer for Davidson's third set-point chance, but Wofford finally ended the set, winning the next three points to go ahead 2-1 in the match with the 29-27 victory.
But the Wildcats shrugged it off in the fourth set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead behind three kills from Pisel. Davidson pushed its lead to 17-7 on two straight points from Brown and Benedict to force the Terriers into a timeout. Wofford used a 7-2 run to cut Davidson's lead in half, 19-14, but the Wildcats won six of the last 10 points, and Sewell's set-winner forced the decisive set with the 25-18 win.
Once again Davidson was in control early, taking a 6-3 lead on a pair of kills from each Pisel and Sewell in the fifth set. Wofford, though, tied the score on a pair of Wildcat hitting errors and a kill by Wendy Burnett. The 'Cats pushed back with a 4-1 run to reclaim a 10-7 lead, but Wofford tied the score again with three straight scores. A Davidson error gave the Terriers the one-point advantage, 11-10, in the abbreviated set, but Wofford's Tara Gough served it into the net, and the Wildcats took advantage. A kill by Perzinski and an ace from Brown forced Wofford into one final timeout, and Perzinski and Brown put away two straight sets from Owen to lift Davidson to the 15-11 win for the match.
Georgia Southern 3, Furman 0
STATESBORO, Ga. - Behind 12 kills each from Hannah Nelson and Meredith Paskert (Brecksville, Ohio) The Georgia Southern Volleyball team (9-8, 2-0) completed a sweep of the conference opening homestand with a 3-0 victory over Furman on Saturday afternoon, September 24th.
The Eagles exploded in the first set to win 25-15, but had to stave off a Furman rally to win the second set 27-25. GSU won a close third set, 25-23, to complete the 3-0 sweep.
Georgia Southern hit .271 for the match and posted a first-set percentage of .424. Parker Small led the team with .714 attack percentage, while Paskert was second on the squad with a .407 hitting percentage. Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) setup the offense as usual, recording 34 of the team's 41 assists.
Powered by 17 digs from libero Lauren LaRocque (Frisco, Texas) the Eagle defense held Furman to a .114 hitting percentage and allowed only one player to reach the 10 kill plateau. Christina Dorismond led the Paladins with 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Hayli Ketner (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Moriah Bellissimo (Blackstone, Va.) both added to the defensive effort with 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Appalachian State 3, Samford 1
BOONE, N.C. - Behind a career-high 16 kills from Alison Blasingame, the Appalachian State volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over Samford in the SoCon opener for both teams on Saturday, Sept. 24.
After dropping the first set by a 25-20 score, the Mountaineers (9-6, 1-0) won the final three sets of the match to send the Bulldogs (13-2, 0-1) to their first loss in six matches.
Samford trailed just twice in the early going of the first set before jumping out to a seven-point lead (17-10) by notching six-straight points on four kills and two Appalachian errors. The Bulldogs would see their lead diminish to just three points (21-18) late in the set before hanging on for a 25-20 set win.
The Apps bounced back in the second set with a 25-20 win of their own. Samford notched the first point of the set before ASU took a 3-2 lead and never trailed again. Appalachian led by as many as seven points (11-4) in the early going before pulling off the win. The Bulldogs never came closer than three points in the late stages of the second set.
The third set featured a back-and-forth battle that feature 16 ties and seven lead changes. Samford looked to have the upper hand land as it held a 21-16 lead, but the Apps rallied with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 22-22. Appalachian would stave off defeat when the Bulldogs took a 24-23 lead and eventually won, 26-25, thanks to back-to-back kills from Kelly Rhein.
Appalachian dominated the fourth and final set, winning by a score of 25-17. The Apps cruised to a 13-7 lead and never led by less than six the rest of the way. Rhein finished with four kills and four digs in the final set as ASU held Samford to a .000 hitting percentage in the final set.
As a team, the Apps hit .230 and held the Bulldogs to a hitting percentage of just .168. Appalachian forced 27 attack errors against the opposition. In addition to her career-high in kills, Blasingame also set a new career-mark with a .682 hitting percentage.
Rhein finished with 11 kills and a season-bets 15 digs while Anna Wagner tallied 14 kills and 12 digs. Meghann Forshey tallied 10 kills and Kasey Sauls notched 35 assists. Lauren Brown had 10 kills and hit .421.
