Spartans, Terriers Drop Non-League Clashes

No. 4 North Carolina 1, Wofford 0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's soccer team fell to #4 North Carolina by a 1-0 score Tuesday evening in the squad's home opener at Snyder Field. The Terriers fall to 2-4-1 overall, while the Tar Heels improve to 6-1-0 on the season.

The first half was a defensive struggle between the two squads, as neither team were able to put a shot on goal during the opening 45 minutes of action. The Terriers were able to attempt two shots in the half, with one by Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez late in the half bouncing off the right goal post.

The Tar Heels were able to score the evening's lone goal in the 56th minute of play, when Enzo Martinez put a shot past Wofford goalkeeper Andrew Drennan into the left side of the goal following a pass by Billy Schuler into the middle of the box.

Wofford nearly scored the tying goal in the 78th minute of play following a throw in, but the ball made its way past UNC goalkeeper Scott Goodwin after a hand ball by Dennis Moore, who received a yellow card as a result.

In the 81st minute, Dominguez Gonzalez headed the ball toward the left side of the goal, with the ball passing the outstretched hands of Goodwin, but it sailed just wide, in what proved to be the final chance that the Terriers had to score the game-tying goal.

Drennan took the loss for Wofford, earning four saves while facing a total of 15 shots. Goodwin was awarded the win, facing four shots throughout the evening.

The Terriers will next be in action Saturday afternoon, hosting College of Charleston to open Southern Conference play. The match is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start time at Snyder Field.

William & Mary 2, UNCG 0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.-William & Mary scored once in each half en route to a 2-0 victory over UNCG, Tuesday at Martin Family Stadium. The loss was the Spartans' third straight.

With UNCG's Davis Griffin making his first career start in goal, the Tribe (4-3-0) didn't score its first goal until the 38th minute. Nicolas Abrigo took a long pass from Will Smith and broke free of the defense for his fourth goal of the season and 1-0 advantage.

Ben Anderson gave William & Mary a 2-0 advantage in the 57th minute when his shot sneaked past Griffin after UNCG's defense failed to clear a loose ball. Patrick O'Brien was credited with the assist.

UNCG (2-4-0) was limited to just 10 shots for the match, and only three were on goal. The Spartans mustered just two shots in the final 33 minutes, both coming with less than five minutes remaining. But the Tribe defense thwarted each effort to hang on for the win.

Fannar Arnarsson led the Spartans with five shots while Hakan Ilhan and Oddur Gudmundsson had two each.

Davis made three saves in his first career start.

The Spartans return to action when they host Gardner-Webb, 7 p.m., Saturday, at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
