Chattanooga Men Third, Women Eleventh

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Senior distance runner Chris Berry (Mufreesboro, Tenn.) ran to a fourth place finish at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic to lead the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s cross country team to a third place finish at Percy Warner Park Saturday morning.

Berry ran the 8-kilometer course in a time of 24:59.20 and teammate, sophomore Lucas Cotter (Collierville, Tenn.) was 10th overall with a time of 25:33.20. Mocs’ junior Nathan Wanuch (Mississauga, Ontario) was 12th and sophomore Mark Cole (McKenzie, Tenn.) placed 24th in the scoring results.

Cincinnati claimed the team title with 75 points and had the overall champion in Eric Finan who paced the field of 190 runners with a time of 24:25.90. The Bearcats placed three runners in the top 20 with Brock Oliver finishing fifth overall with a time of 25:12.10.

Alabama was second in the men’s race 85 points led by second place finisher Carrison Kemei with a time of 24:35.60. Middle Tennessee’s Justus David was third overall with a time of 24:40.10. The Blue Raiders finished fifth with a score of 143 behind instate foe Belmont’s score of 131 points.

Lipscomb placed sixth overall followed by Memphis, Nashville Harriers, host Vanderbilt in ninth and Florida Gulf Coast 10th out of 22 teams.

Senior Tara Gietema (Knoxville, Tenn.) placed 17th overall in the women’s 5-kilometer race with a time of 18:39.70. Newcomer Sarah White-Woerner (Ooltewah, Tenn.) was the Lady Mocs’ second finisher in 52nd place with a time of 19:44.00. Morgan Buchanan placed 68th for Chattanooga with a time of 20:16.60 in a field of 194 runners.

Alabama claimed the team title in the women’s race with 45 points, placing all five scoring runners in the Top 15. Middle Tennessee’s Lucy Kapkiai ran unattached and paced the field with a time of 17:53.40 followed by Lipscomb’s Tessa Hoefle at 18:05.40 and Ashley Lehman at 18:08.10. The Bisons placed second in the team scoring with 51 points. Belmont finished third with 80 points followed by Vanderbilt’s B-team in fourth. Cincinnati was fifth followed by Jacksonville State, Memphis, Rhodes, Florida Gulf Coast and Marshall in 10th out of 23 teams.

The women will return to action Friday, Sept. 30 at the Tennessee Tech Invitational in Cookeville, Tenn., while the men will run at the Greater Louisville Classic the following day in Louisville, Ky. Appalachian State women second, men second

BOONE, N.C.--Senior Olivia Jacobs picked up a top-ten finish as the Western Carolina women’s cross country team finished fourth overall, while the men took sixth in the Mountaineer Open at the State Farm Fields on the outskirts of the campus of Appalachian State University Friday evening. The finish for Jacobs is her first top-ten finish of the season. In the dual portion of the meet, Appalachian State retained the Old Mountain Jug.

On the women’s side, Ohio State swept the top five, with Jordan Jennewine placing first in the 5K with a time of 18:11.2. Jacobs placed ninth overall with a time of 18:28.9. Junior Morgan Turner, the Catamounts’ top finisher in the WCU Invitational two weeks ago, finished just outside of the top ten with a time of 18:37.1. Junior Mara Smith rounded out the Catamounts in the top-20 placing 16th, crossing the finish in 18:43.0.

 Overall, the team rankings behind Ohio State were Appalachian State in second, followed by Queens, Western Carolina, East Tennessee State and UNC Asheville.

The men’s 6400m run team top three were the same as the women’s results with Ohio State, Appalachian State and Queens taking the top three spots. WCU placed sixth overall. Ohio State’s Jake Edwards won the race in 19:28.1. Western Carolina’s top finisher was junior Nolan Clark, who placed 18th with a time of 20:15.4. Jake Swimmer finished in 20:31.1 and freshman Travis Alfaro in 20:52.2.

Cross country will be back in action in two weeks as the Catamounts will travel to the 38th Annual Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa. on the campus of Lehigh. The women will participate in a 6K while the men will compete in an 8K run.

 

Davidson finishes third

CLEMSON, S.C. – Davidson senior Ryan Hopkins completed the 8K course at Clemson’s Musser Farms in a Wildcat record time of 24:06.54, to place second at the Clemson Invitational Friday evening.

Davidson placed third in the highly competitive field that included several ACC teams. Virginia Tech won with 108 points and was followed by No. 9 Florida State with 114. The ‘Cats were third with 155 and followed by Southern Conference foe Furman (203) and Wake Forest (213). Georgia Tech, ranked 11th in the South Region by the USTFCCCA, placed sixth with 218 points.

Hopkins, who now owns the five fastest 8K times in Davidson history, was just 10 seconds off the pace of race winner Ty McCormack of Clemson.

Junior Demetrios Pagonis placed fifth in 24:18.16 to give the ‘Cats two runners in the Top Five. Senior Ian Tupper was 20th in 24:49.54. Freshman HenryFalotico (35th place, 25:10.05) and sophomore Andrew Lantz (36th place, 25:11.34) rounded out the ‘Cats scoring group.  Juniors Wes Reynolds (38th, 25:14.97) and Vincent Weir (42nd place, 25:22.00) were the ‘Cats sixth and seventh finishers.

The Wildcats will next compete Friday, Sept. 30 at the Charlotte Cross Country Invitational at McAlpine Park.

 

Furman women finish third

CLEMSON, S.C. -- The Furman women’s cross country team placed third with 111 points at the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, S.C., Friday night, while the Paladins took fourth place in the men’s meet with 118 points.  Clemson won the women’s meet with a score of 45 points, edging out Florida State by nine points.  The Seminoles won the men’s meet with a score of 28 points.   

On the women’s 5K course, senior Erin Barker placed sixth to lead the Paladins with a time of 21:08.65.  Senior Brooke Mosteller finished 18th with a time of 21:40.91, followed by freshman Sinead Haughey in 19th place with a time of 21:42.23.  Sophomore Kacie Shoen placed 41st with a time of 22:46.95, and fellow sophomore Erika Shaver rounded out the Paladin scorers after taking 45th place at 22:51.09.  

Senior Lee Gilmer led the Furman men’s team, placing eleventh with a time of 24:43.20 on the 8K course, followed by junior Wilkerson Given in 21st place with a time of 24:54.31.  Freshman Stuart Graham took 25th place with a time of 24:59.82, and senior Chris Caldwell finished 38th after turning in a time of 25:12.03.  Caldwell was followed by freshman Tripp Hurt, who placed 39th with a time of 25:14.34 to complete the Paladin scoring slate.  

Furman will compete at the Clemson Invitational on September 16.
