Orangeburg, S.C. - The Bulldogs (2-3-1) traveled to South Carolina State (1-3-2) on Wednesday for a non-conference night match-up that saw two overtimes, 31 fouls, eight yellow cards and two reds cards, but neither team managed to score a goal as the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
Senior goalkeeper Whitney Nave was kept busy in her first start of the season as The Citadel allowed eight corner kicks and eight shots in the first half of play on Wednesday. Both teams played a physical first half as the referees handed out five fouls apiece and one yellow card to South Carolina State's Sarah Harris.
The second half began with more aggressive play from both sides as South Carolina State would rack up four more yellow cards and a red card ejection all in the first 20 minutes of period two. The Citadel managed to fire nine shot attempts in the final 45 minutes, but did not get a corner kick opportunity for the second consecutive game.
Frustration began to set in late in the second half as The Citadel's Ruth Leiva received a yellow card in the 68th minute and a second yellow card just four minutes later to give her a red card ejection, which will leave her out of Saturday's game against Charleston Southern University.
The Citadel would replace goalie Nave in the 75th minute for freshman keeper Sarah Katchen who has now seen action in two consecutive games. Nave racked up four saves in her time in net. The second half would end in a 0-0 tie and force a sudden death overtime.
Both overtimes were played hard as the physical activity continued into the bonus. S.C. State and The Citadel collected another yellow card each, but no goals were able to get by either keeper and the contest would end in a 0-0 tie.
With Wednesday's tie, The Citadel remains undefeated against in-state rival South Carolina State with an all-time record of 10-0-1 in the "battle of the bulldogs."
The Citadel soccer team will return to Charleston for a four-game home stretch that begins on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. on Washington Light Infantry Field.
