SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Elon's Luis Vargas has been named the Southern Conference men's cross country runner of the week for his performance at the College of Charleston Invite on Saturday, the league office announced today.
The freshman from Angier, N.C. paced the Phoenix with his second-place finish with a time of 25:29. That time ranks him fourth on the men's 8K all-time performance list.
Elon opened its 2011 campaign with a second-place finish at the CofC Invite with 41 points. They finished just behind conference rival College of Charleston, which had 33 points.
Vargas and the rest of the Phoenix squad will return to action this weekend, as they host the third annual Elon Invitational.
