CofC Continues Play in Cougar Classic
HANAHAN, S.C. - Senior Leigh Whittaker and junior Kathy Boehm shot rounds of 74 as the College of Charleston women's golf team completed the second round of play in the Cougar Classic.
On a day when only five teams shot under-par the Cougars shot +21 and are in 12th place heading into the final round tomorrow. North Carolina (-9) will look to defend its 2010 championship as they lead Florida (-8) by one stroke and LSU (-5) by four.
Boehm was very consistent for much of her second round as she had 14 pars and is currently tied for 14th with a total score of 69-74=143 (-1). Whittaker had four birdies for her round and improved by two strokes over her first round score.
The teams will tee off tomorrow in a shotgun start format at 9:00 AM with the leaders going from hole one.

Wendt's 71 Paces Paladins In Cougar Classic Second Round
Charleston, S.C. -- Senior Liz Wendt (+4) fired a one-under 71 on Monday morning to help Furman (301-302=603) maintain its hold on 13th place after two rounds in the Cougar Classic at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Club in Charleston, S.C.
The Houston, Texas, native carded six birdies on the day, including four on the front nine, as she moved from 70th place to a share of 38th after 36 holes of play in the season opening tournament. Teammate Laura Wearn (+2) birdied five holes in an even par round that moved her into a share of 28th place with 18 holes to play.
The University of North Carolina (-9) moved into the lead with a six-under 282 on Monday. The Tarheels lead Florida (-8) by one stroke while first round leader LSU is four strokes off of the lead in third place. North Carolina State os on fourth place with Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia in a four-way tie for fifth place.
Tennessee's Erica Popson (-9) used a second round 69 to maintain first place one stroke ahead of LSU golfer and Seneca, S.C., native Austin Ernst (-8).
Final round action in the 54-hole tournament is set for Tuesday morning.

Cnops moves up as Spartans struggle during round two of Cougar Classic
CHARLESTON, S.C.-Freshman Fanny Cnops shot a 3-under par 69 and moved up 27 places into a tie for 20th during the second round of play at College of Charleston Cougar Classic, Monday at Yeamans Hall Club.
Overall, the Spartans shot 317 on Monday and are 19th among 22 teams at 617 (305-312). North Carolina leads the field at 567, followed by Florida (568), LSU (571) and NC State (577). Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia are tied for fifth at 581.
Teeing off on the 10th hole, Cnops carded three birdies and a bogey on her first nine holes to make the run at 2-under. She birdied her 12th hole (No. 3) and finished her round with six consecutive pars to finish at 69.
After two rounds, Cnops is tied for 20th at even par 144. She trails Tennessee's Erica Popson (-9) by nine strokes.
While Cnops was exceling, the rest of the Spartans struggled during the second round.
Junior Courtney Taylor fired a 6-over 78 and moved into a tie for 74th at 154 (76-78). Senior Ana Lucia Martinez shot an 81 and is tied for 95th at 158.
Senior Begona Sarabia carded an 84 and sits in a tie for 105th at 162, while freshman Berglind Bjornsdottir shot 91 and is 115th
The third and final round gets underway with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.

Elon Leads Terrier Intercollegiate After One Round
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- A very consistent first 18 holes of the season by the Elon women's golf team has the Phoenix atop the leader board after the first round of the Terrier Intercollegiate. All five Elon players sit in the top eight and the Phoenix holds a four-stroke edge on its nearest competitor entering Tuesday's final round of play.
Pacing the Phoenix is Shannon Prunty who fired a first-round 73 to sit in a tie for fifth in the 54-player field. Prunty had three birdies over her 18 holes.
A quartet of Elon players shot a 74 on day one and are tied for eighth - Virginia Mayer, Martyna Mierzwa, Katie Partridge and Kristi Ingram. Mayer recorded one of the two eagles by all players and notched 12 holes of par. Mierzwa went two-under on the par three holes and had four birdies. Partridge, who had 12 pars, and Ingram were both playing in their first collegiate events.
Competing as an individual, Lauren Lebak fired a 75 on day one and is tied for 13th. Meghan Green and Diana Davis are also competing individually and are tied for 27th after a first-round mark of 78.
The Phoenix, which shot a 295 on day one, leads Newberry (299) by four strokes in the nine-team event. Host Wofford sits third after carding a 302 on Monday. Presbyterian (305), High Point (306), Gardner-Webb (309), Appalachian State (314), USC Upstate (323) and The Citadel (330) complete the field.
The second and final round will be played on Tuesday at the Spartanburg Country Club.
Taylor Shoots Career Low and Sits Atop Terrier Intercollegiate Leaderboard
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Wofford's Tarah Taylor sits tied for the lead at even par with a career 18-hole low after the first round of the Terrier Intercollegiate at the par-72 5,972 yard Country Club of Spartanburg Monday afternoon.
Taylor turned in a scorecard of a 35 on the front nine and a 37 on the back nine to finish the opening round with a 72. Three other players sit atop the leader board at 72 -- Micah Dowling from Presbyterian College, Yue Xu from Appalachian State and Taylor Weaver from Newberry College.
As a team Wofford is in third place with a score of 302. Elon leads with a 295 followed by Newberry College with a 299. Presbyterian is in fourth with a 305, followed by High Point with a 306, Gardner-Webb with a 309, App State with a 314, USC Upstate with a 323 and The Citadel rounds out the field with a 330.
Trailing Taylor for the Terriers was Alex Hendricks who turned in a 76 and sits tied for 15th. Sarah Hurt and freshman Lauren Dunbar both carded a 77 and are tied for 18th to complete the Terriers scorers on the day.
Round two is set to begin Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
Xu Earns Share of Lead at Wofford's Opening Round
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State University women's golf carded a 314 (+26) to stand in seventh place, and junior Yue Xu (Beijing, China/HuiJia School) tied for the lead through 18 holes at the Terrier Intercollegiate at even par at the par-72 5,972 yard Spartanburg Country Club on Monday.
The Beijing, China native carded three birdies in the round and was just one-over-par on the day's par-four holes. All three birdies came on par-fives. Additionally, she carded 12 pars.
Rumbidzai Masamvu (Harare, Zimbabwe/Dominican Convent) finished the day eight strokes behind her classmate with an 80 (+8) to stand in 33rd place heading into Tuesday's action. Mimi Burke (Mooresville, N.C./Cannon School) shot an 81 (+9) on the afternoon to tie for 35th place and third for ASU.
In her first official competition as a Mountaineer, Lauren Smith (Salisbury, N.C./UNC Greensboro) matched Burke's 81 on Monday. Smith earned a redshirt last season after transferring from Southern Conference rival UNC Greensboro.
Freshman Elena Thomas (Waxahachie, Texas/Waxahachie) also made her ASU debut on Monday, carding an 82 (+10). The Wacahachie, Texas native is the only non-junior competing for Appalachian at the event.
In addition to the fivesome, head coach Heather Brown sent three additional golfers to compete as individuals at the event.
Samantha Patton (Morganton, N.C./Mars Hill) and Brittany Zachrich (Hickory, N.C./Montreat) each fired 81s (+9) to tie for 35th and Samantha Bonham (Greensboro, N.C./UNC Pembroke) finished the day tied for 51st place with an 87 (+15).
Elon leads the tournament with a 295, four strokes ahead of second-place Newberry. Host Wofford is third at 302 and The Citadel ranks ninth at 330 through 18 holes.
The Apps find themselved just five strokes behind Gardner-Webb for sixth place.
The season-opening tournament concludes on Tuesday.
Pellegrini Finishes Strong in Opening Round of Terrier Intercollegiate
Spartanburg, S.C. - The Citadel Golf team opened the 2011-12 fall season at the Terrier Intercollegiate on Monday afternoon at the Spartanburg Country Club. Behind sophomore Erica Pellegrini, who completed the opening round with a 77, the Bulldogs finished the opening day in ninth place (330).
Pellegrini is locked in a nine-way tie for 18th after shooting a 37 on the front nine, followed by a 40 on the back nine. Behind Pellegrini is Bree Baumgartner, who shot an 81 on the first day of action. The trio of Devin Lowe (86), Takima Butler (87) and Kellie Anderson (99) account for remaining Citadel competitors.
Southern Conference foe Elon leads the team competition with a 295, followed by Newberry College (299) and Wofford (302). Individually, there is a four-way tie atop the leaderbord between Micah Downing (Presbyterian), Yue Xu (Appalachian State), Tarah Taylor (Wofford) and Taylor Weaver (Newberry), all shooting a 72.
