CofC Starts Strong in Cougar Classic
HANAHAN, S.C. - Led by junior Kathy Boehm's 3-under 69 the College of Charleston women's golf team got off to a good start in the first round of the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club.
CofC is currents in ninth place and just four strokes out of sixth place with a team score of 5-over 293. LSU leads the field with a combined score of 280 (-8). Florida is second at 284 (-4) and defending champion North Carolina is in third at 285 (-3).
Boehm birdied three of her first five holes on the day and is tied for sixth place individually. She finished with seven birdies on her first round scorecard.
Fellow juniors Vanessa Koechli and Ainhoa Nogales each carded round of 74 (+2) and senior Leigh Whittaker rounded out the scoring for the Cougars with a 4-over 76.
CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said he was pleased with how the team started the tournament.
"I think we are in good position heading into the second round tomorrow," he said. "Kathy (Boehm) played a great round and we got good scores from our other players as well."

Spartans enjoy solid start at Cougar Classic
CHARLESTON, S.C.-UNCG women's golf team opened its 2011-12 season by shooting 305 during the opening round of the Cougar Classic, Sunday Yeamans Hall Club. The Spartans are tied for 16th among the 22-team field in the overall standings.
LSU owns the overall team lead after shooting 8-under par 280. Rounding out the top five teams are Florida (284), North Carolina (285) NC State (287) and Alabama (287).
Tennessee's Erica Popson (-6) owns the individual lead.
Freshman Fanny Cnops led the Spartans and is tied for 47th after shooting 3-over par 75. Cnops was even after the fifth nine holes, but shot 3-over on the back nine. She had one birdie, two bogeys and a double bogey.
Junior Courtney Taylor is tied for 60th at 4-over 76, while freshman Berglind Bjornsdottir and senior Ana Lucia Martinez are tied for 71st at 5-over par 77. Senior Begona Sarabia is tied for 84th after shooting a 78.

Wearn Leads Furman In Opening Round Of Cougar Classic
Charleston, S.C. -- Junior Laura Wearn carded an opening round 74 to help Furman into 13th place after one round in the season opening Cougar Classic at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Club in Charleston, S.C., on Sunday.
The Charlotte, N.C., native, who began play on the back nine, tallied birdies No. 15 and No. 18 while shooting one-over 37 on both the front and back nine. She shares 37th place after 18 holes in the 54-hole tournament.
LSU fired an eight-under 280 to open up a four-shot lead over second place Florida and five shot advantage over third place North Carolina. North Carolina State, Alabama and Tennessee rounded out the top six after one round in the 22-team event.
The Lady Vols' Erin Popson shot a six-under par 66 to take a one stroke lead over a group of three players tied for second at five-under 67.
In addition to Wearn's team-leading 74, Furman got solid collegiate debuts from freshmen Daffodil Sanchez and Laura DeMarco who each shot three-over 75 to begin their Paladins careers.
Round two is set for Monday morning with final round action slated for Tuesday.
