SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Elon's Chanelle Smith has been named the Southern Conference's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate Ali Deatsch has garnered Defensive Player of the Week Honors. College of Charleston's Sloane White has been named the SoCon Volleyball Freshman of the Week respectively, for the week of September 12. The selections are made by the conference office.
Smith, who was honored as the Freshman of the Week for August 29, recorded 58 kills in Elon's three matches last week, averaging 5.27 kills per set. She helped the Phoenix finish 2-1 at the Butler Invitational, where Elon was named Co-Champions.
During Elon's four-set match against host Butler, the Fayetteville, Ga. native played three sets and led all players with 21 kills off 42 attempts with one error to hit .476. It was the most kills for a Phoenix player since the 2008 season. Smith also recorded a double-double with 15 digs in that match
The freshman outside hitter was also named to the all-tournament team.
Deatsch recorded 70 digs in 12 sets, averaging 5.83 digs per set. The Elmhurst, Ill. native also led all players against Central Michigan and Austin Peay with 21 and 31 digs, respectively. The 31 digs against Austin Peay was a season-high.
During the Central Michigan match, the junior matched her career-high of five aces. Deatsch was also named to the all-tournament team with Smith.
White led the Cougars with a season-high 14 kills and .407 kill percentage against South Carolina at the College of Charleston Invitational.
The Indianapolis native totaled 30 kills over the weekend along with 11 digs. The middle blocker also led the Cougars in service aces with five.
She was named to the College of Charleston Invitational All-Tournament team.
