Appalachian State 2, Detroit 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. - ASU's Costin Gregory (Raleigh, N.C. / Sanderson) scored the game-winner on his first career goal as Appalachian State men's soccer picked up a 2-0 victory over Detroit at the Davidson College adidas Classic on Sunday. With the win, the Mountaineers level out to 2-2-1 on the year, while the Titans slip to 3-2-0.
Before the game, a moment of silence was conducted to honor the memory of those whose lives were impacted by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
In the first half, the Titans maintained offensive advantage, and opened up a 6-1 advantage in shots with four corner kicks. On a Detroit throw-in, a clever header by Pat Lepera nearly found the net, but a speedy reaction by ASU keeper Danny Free (Doncaster, England / Hall Cross School) denied the Titans' opportunity.
Midway through the first half, the Mountaineers notched their first corner kick, and senior Lee Rutter (Nottingham, England / South Nottingham) had a good look but sailed his shot narrowly over the crossbar.
ASU carried its momentum to six total shots in the first half, but the period expired without a score by either team.
Twenty minutes into the second stanza, Nate Latigue (Cary, N.C. / Panther Creek), Sean Dreybus (Newport News, Va. / Warwick) and Rutter broke loose in a three-on-two situation, but despite the situation, Rutter's shot missed just left of the frame.
In the 73rd minute, the Apps broke loose deep in the Titans' end. On a serve by Dreybus, Nicholas Skoda (Knoxville, Tenn. / Hardin Valley) connected on a hard shot from six yards. Detroit keeper Anthony Shepherd made the initial save, but Gregory was in position for the one-touch shot on the rebound to net the game's first goal.
Detroit amplified its pressure in the final minutes but not without a cost. In the final seconds, Sekani Sinclair (Parkland, Fla. / Marjory Stoneman Douglas) and Dreybus broke loose with the ball behind the entire Titan defense. With just Shepherd in their way, the duo had no trouble circumnavigating the keeper, and Dreybus had the final touch to ice the game with less than 15 seconds remaining.
Free finished the day with three saves for Appalachian, while Detroit's Shepherd notched five.
The Mountaineers next travel to Conway, S.C. for the Coastal Carolina Invitational. Appalachian takes on the host Chanticleers on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Hartwick on Sunday, Sept. 18 at noon.
Elon 5, North Florida 0
ELON, N.C. - Reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year Chris Thomas scored two goals and added two assists as the Elon men's soccer team opened up on offense with a 5-0 victory against the visiting North Florida Ospreys at Rudd Field under sunny skies on Sunday afternoon. Five different players tallied points in Elon's (1-3-1) first win of the season. North Florida fell to 1-4 on the year.
"It was good to get the first win of the year," noted Elon head coach Darren Powell. "The coaches were impressed with our energy and intensity from start to finish. It was nice to score a few goals along the way. Now we must use this as a springboard for the rest of the year as we look to compete against a talented unbeaten Campbell side."
The Phoenix dominated possession for most of the game, finishing with a 22-4 edge in the shot column, including a 14-1 advantage in the first half. Just minutes into the contest, rookie Jason Waterman, who earned the first start of his collegiate career, served a great ball forward to junior Jordan Smith. Smith outran two defenders and forced North Florida keeper Federico Bertele to make a diving save. The ball glanced off Bertele's fingertips and went wide of the net.
Midway through the half, forward Denzel Ogunyase had a terrific look at the net, getting a shot past the goalie but a North Florida player blocked the ball off the line to save the score.
Finally in the 33rd minute, Chris Thomas and Daniel Lovitz combined for the first goal of the game. Both had just come off the bench and Thomas sent a short pass from the right side to Lovitz in the middle of the box. Lovitz punched home the goal from about eight yards out into the middle of the net. The points were the first of the year for both players.
Thomas wasted little time adding to his totals. With under five minutes to play in the half, junior midfielder Gabe Latigue sent a long pass forward. Thomas got ahead of the Osprey back line and notched his first goal of the year into the top left side of the net.
The second half continued much like the first with the Phoenix sending a barrage of shots at the North Florida defense. Archie Karpeh was the next Phoenix to connect at the 61:30 mark. With the ball in Elon's offensive third, Latigue sent a pass wide left to Thomas who touched the ball back to the middle. Karpeh tapped the ball into an empty net after Bertele had come out of the goal toward the Thomas threat.
With 20 different field players seeing action, Elon used a variety of combinations in the game. In the 79th minute, Thomas made it 4-0 in favor of the Phoenix. Sophomore Glenn Scott got his first assist of the year, serving the ball into the box where Thomas chipped it over the goalie for his second score of the afternoon.
With time winding down, Scott took advantage of an Elon free kick, converting his first career goal on a driving shot to the far right corner from about 15 yards out in the 87th minute. Scott, Thomas and Latigue all had multi-point outings.
Elon will aim for back-to-back wins when the Phoenix takes to the road to challenge an undefeated Campbell team on Wednesday, September 14 at 7 p.m.

"Our guys showed a lot of character playing down a man," added Kennedy. "The turning point of the match was Luigi's goal."
Senior Alex Evert (Marietta, Ga.) converted a penalty in the 79th minute to put Georgia Southern ahead, 3-0.
Goakeeper Ryan Platt (Preston, England) had a tremendous day in goal, but was denied his second shutout in as many matches when Lipscomb's Evan Beutler scored a goal with just a few seconds remaining in the match. The senior netminder made three saves in the match.

Caughran collected a header into the box from Will Mayhew and knocked a shot past Spartans keeper Peyton Ford to break a scoreless tie. Aaron Weldon also shared the assist.
"It wasn't much of a soccer game, to be honest," said UNCG head coach Justin Maullin. "It was very direct and unexciting play on the part of both teams. I told the guys that we can use this game to help us as we prepare for the Southern Conference season because, in terms of the style of play, this is how a lot of our conference games will be."
Trailing 1-0 down the stretch, UNCG (2-2-0) had a pair of chances in the final seven minutes. Aaron Reifschneider's attempt in the 84th minute went over the cross bar, and Reifschneider took another shot in the 88th minute but Charlotte keeper Klay Davis made the save.
