NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross County Coaches Association has announced the women's 2011 Division I All-Academic Track & Field Team. A record total of 663 student-athletes representing 172 institutions compose the group. Elon's Amy Salek was one of the All-Academic honorees along with four other athletes from the Southern Conference.
Salek, a rising senior, finished the 2011 outdoor season with a 31st place finish in the 400-meter dash at the NCAA East Preliminary in May. The Wycoff, N.J., native was a member of the 2011 SoCon champion 4x400-meter relay team that set a school record with a time of 3:43.83. Salek is an exercise sport science major and carries a 3.73 GPA.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Institutions given All-Academic Team status will be named on Thursday, August 11.
