CHARLESTON, S.C. - Head Coach Jamie Futrell has announced the release of the women's golf schedule. The College of Charleston will once again open its 2011-12 campaign with the Cougar Classic presented by Piggly Wiggly. The marquee event at Yeamans Hall Club will boast nine of the top 20 teams in the country and will kick-off another competitive season of Cougar golf.
"We have a very competitive schedule again this year," Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "With the success of the Cougar Classic, we have been able to attain a schedule that many non BCS programs have not been able to play."
This past season the Cougars finished runner-up at the Southern Conference Championship and senior Leigh Whittaker qualified as an individual for the NCAA East Regional in Daytona Beach, Fla.
This season the Cougars will play in tournaments at national powers LSU in the LSU Tiger Classic and at Wake Forest in the Bryan National Intercollegiate. They will also travel to the site of the NCAA East Regional when the team travels in the fall to Penn State for the Nittany Lion Invitational. Other tournaments include a competition hosted by East Carolina and a trip to Austin, Texas for the Challenge at Onion Creek hosted by Texas State.
The Cougars will once again host at some of the most noted venues in the country. Besides the Yeamans Hall event C of C will host a fall and spring tournament at Kiawah Island. The Cougars will look to defend their Pinehurst Challenge Championship when they travel up the road to Pinehurst, N.C. to host at Pinehurst Resort's Pinehurst #6.
"Overall I am very pleased with this year's schedule," Futrell said. "We basically return the same team we have had for the past two years. This schedule will once again give us the opportunity to make the NCAA Regionals. The schedule definitely prepares us for our conference championship as well."
The team's regular season will culminate with the Southern Conference Championship at Hilton Head Island from Apr. 13-15.
