Greenville, S.C. -- Furman University's Alexa Rancourt carded a 73 on Tuesday at Ansley Golf Club's Settindown Creek Course in Roswell, Ga., to qualify for next month's 111th United States Women's Amateur Championship.
The rising junior posted the fourth best score of the day at the Roswell qualifier to earn one of eight available spots in the U.S. Women's Amateur which is set to be held August 8-14, at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, R.I.
A native of Portland, Maine, Rancourt compiled a 77.9 stroke average and posted two top-10 finishes for the Paladins during the 2010-11 season. She was named to the NGCA All-American Scholar Team earlier this month after posting a 3.62 GPA in philosophy.
More than 150 players will open tournament play with 36 holes of match play August 8-9. The top 64 players following the second day of stroke play will advance to match play. Each round of match play will be televised by the Golf Channel.
Furman golfers have a long history of success at the U.S. Women's Amateur. Former Paladin and LPGA Hall-of-Famer Beth Daniel claimed the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1975 and 1977 while former Furman standout Brandi Jackson claimed a runner-up finish at the tournament in 2002. Recent graduate and current LPGA Futures Tour rookie Stefanie Kenoyer qualified for last year's U.S. Women's Amateur along with current Paladin Liz Wendt.
