Daniel Aldrich Wins CPL All-Star Home Run Derby, Ties Record

Cougar outfielder wins his second Home Run derby this summer.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - College of Charleston outfielder Daniel Aldrich captured the 2011 Rawlings Coastal Plain League All-Star Home Run Derby title, blasting 18 long balls to tie the event record. The event took place on Sunday night at Fayetteville's J.P. Riddle Stadium as a lead-up to the 2011 CPL All-Star Game tonight.

The event win marks the second home run derby title for Aldrich this summer after he won the prestigious TD Ameritrade HR Derby in Omaha, Neb. Aldrich's father, Charles, who pitched to him in Omaha, was on hand to pitch to his son again in Fayetteville. Aldrich proceeded to launch 18 total home runs, 16 with a wooden bat and two with an aluminum bat. His total launch count tied former Wilmington Shark Dusty Benko who hit 18 home runs in the 2004 Derby.

Aldrich's closest challenger, Forest City's Axel Johnson, entered the final round trailing by four home runs. However, he only hit two long balls in the championship round, securing the win for Aldrich. A total of 16 competitors from the league's 15 teams took part in the event.

Playing for the Wilmington Sharks of the CPL summer collegiate baseball league, Aldrich entered the All-Star weekend tied for fourth in the league with 28 RBIs.

Aldrich will remain in Fayetteville to play in tonight's CPL All-Star game. He has been named to five All-America teams and was named the NCBWA Freshman of the Year.
