SoCon Trio Named to Academic All-District Teams

Matt Leeds Named to Capital One Academic-All District Team

CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston redshirt-junior third baseman Matt Leeds has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 First Team as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). An accounting major with minors in economics and finance, Leeds now moves on to the national ballot with results announced on May 24 for the Academic All-America team. Leeds is currently batting .369 on the season with 15 home runs and a team-best 67 RBIs.

To be nominated for the team, a student-athlete must have a 3.3 or better cumulative GPA and be in their second year of competition and academically at a school.

The Cougars host UNC Greensboro in a key Southern Conference series this weekend, as both clubs are tied for second place in the league with 14-7 SoCon records. First pitch Friday night is set for 6:00 p.m. and Saturday's contest has a 7:00 p.m. start. Sunday's 1:00 p.m. contest offers free admission to everyone in honor of Mother's Day.

 

Nick Orvin Named to Capital One Academic All-District Team

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel's Nick Orvin has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 Second Team as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information of America) on Thursday.

Orvin (Moncks Corner, S.C.) is a physical education major with a 3.75 cumulative GPA. The junior outfielder is batting .306 with 38 runs scored, 56 hits, 12 doubles, 12 stolen bases, 26 RBI and leads the team with seven home runs this season.

To be nominated for the team, a student-athlete must have a 3.3 or better cumulative GPA and be in their second year of competition and academically at a school. Orvin was also selected as the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week on March 30.

 

Gary Cramer Named To Academic All-District Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Gary Cramer, a senior designated hitter on the Samford baseball team, was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team's second team for District IV, which was released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

The Academic All-District Team, which is voted on by the members of CoSIDA, is used to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom.

Cramer, a native of Hoover, Ala., has maintained a 3.63 grade-point average in sports medicine at Samford. He plans to attend Dental School at UAB in the fall.

In the field, Cramer became the team's main designated hitter midway through the season as a junior in 2010. That season, he hit .330 with six doubles and 17 RBI. This season he has seen action in 24 games as a DH, batting .255 with a home run and five RBI.
