Arguello Earns NCAA Singles Bid

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Furman senior Monica Arguello has been selected as one of the 64 singles players that will compete in the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships to be held May 20-25 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. The competition will begin following the conclusion of the team championship with Stanford University serving as the host.

Arguello, currently ranked 73rd in the country, has been listed among the top 75 athletes in the nation all year and will represent the Southern Conference in the NCAA Singles Championships.  The 2011 Furman Female Athlete of the Year, she has won her last 11 matches to compile a record of 18-4 thus far this season. After posting an undefeated 10-0 record in league competition, she was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year.  Arguello was named to the All-Southern Conference first team for singles for the fourth consecutive season and has also been named to either the first or second all-conference team for doubles all four seasons of her career.

"Monica has had a great senior year," said Furman head coach Debbie Southern.  "She has beaten some highly ranked players, recording wins over the number one player at both N.C. State and South Carolina.  This is a great reward for four years of hard work for Monica.  I'm really excited that she made the tournament and has the opportunity to play in the NCAAs and the opportunity to become an All-American."

The Lakeland, Fla., native has served as Furman's top singles player the past two seasons and owns an impressive 39-1 career Southern Conference singles record.  With 67 career singles victories, she ranks ninth all-time in Furman career history.  She has racked up 125 singles and doubles victories during her career, good for seventh most in Furman history.

Pairings for the competition will be announced at a later date.
