STANFORD, Calif. --  Furman senior Monica Arguello's season came to an end at the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships on Wednesday afternoon as Washington's Venise Chan posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Arguello in the round of 64 at the Taube Center.  Arguello concluded her final season with a singles mark of 18-5 and is currently ranked 73rd nationally. 

Recently honored as the 2011 Southern Conference Player of the Year, Arguello has accumulated numerous accolades during her four years. The four-time All-Southern Conference first team selection has massed a 38-1 career singles record against league opponents, competing at the top of the lineup the last two years. Chosen Furman's 2010-11 Edna Hartness Female Athlete of the Year, she led the Paladins to two Southern Conference regular-season championships and one tournament crown.  

With 67 career singles victories, Arguello concludes her tenure tied for ninth all-time in Furman history. She has racked up 125 singles and doubles victories during her career, leaving her tied for seventh in the Paladin record books.

"I did not want my career to end, because I have had such a great experience at Furman," said Arguello following Wednesday's match.  "Coach Southern and the team have helped me achieve so much during my time at Furman and have given me an incredible four years as a member of the Paladin team.  I have no regrets."

A native of Lakeland, Fla., Arguello intends to begin work on a Master's degree at Pittsburg in the fall and plans to become a child life specialist.
