Appalachian State 6, Wofford 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women's tennis team traveled to Appalachian State Friday afternoon to face the Mountaineers at the ASU Tennis Courts. Wofford began with a stellar start in doubles, winning the point, but Appalachian State swept the singles competition to grab a 6-1 victory over the Terriers.
Wofford drops to a 10-12 record on the season, with a 2-6 Southern Conference standing. Appalachian grabs a 10-8 overall record and improves to 3-5 in the SoCon.
The Terriers came out on fire to earn the early doubles point. Coach Hangstefer's squad only gave up three games total at the No. 1 and 3 doubles slots. At No. 1, Wofford's Emilia Milovanovic and Haley Baird routed ASU's Ellie Linsell and Blakeley Bean 8-1. Wofford's Lucy Schermerhorn and Samantha Sullivan nearly mirrored the same result, beating ASU's Jessica Thaggard and Amanda Cash 8-2.
Despite the strong play in doubles, Appalachian State went on the control the remainder of the match and win every singles match. This marks the first time on the season the Terriers have lost a match after winning the doubles point.
Wofford's Sarah Evans recorded the strongest battle, after forcing her match at No. 3 to a super tie-breaker. Evans beat Thaggard 6-4 in the second set after losing the first set 6-2, but Thaggard came out on top in the tie-breaker 10-1.
UNCG 6, Georgia Southern 1
STATESBORO, Ga. - UNCG swept the doubles point and then took five of the six singles matches as it remained undefeated in conference play with a 6-1 win over Georgia Southern on Friday afternoon.
The Spartans (12-4, 7-0 Southern Conference) continued their impressive doubles play this season as they swept the doubles point for the eighth time this season and won the doubles point for the 13th time. Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty got things started with an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles to improve their season record to 14-2.
Mikayla Rogers and Devon Sutherland clinched the doubles point for UNCG with their 8-6 win at No. 3 and Stephanie Macfarlane and Alex Whitehead made it a clean sweep with an 8-7 (7) win at No. 1.
Dougherty got UNCG rolling in singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 to put the Spartans up 2-0. Dilara Yurtkuran made it a three-point lead for UNCG with her 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.
Georgia Southern (8-10, 2-7 SoCon) was able to score its lone point of the match at No. 3 when Melanie Rolle was able to score a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win. Whitehead came right back for UNCG with a 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 to clinch the win for the Spartans.
Wilkins then pushed her singles record to 14-2 this season with her 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 and Rogers closed things out with a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (6) win at No. 6 singles.
