Elon Concludes Day One at Liberty Collegiate Invite
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Elon University track and field team wrapped up day one action at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational on Friday, April 1, at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex, as the Phoenix had several outstanding performances in the hammer throw and javelin.
The Phoenix placed two athletes in the top-12 in the javelin finals with Justine Robertson and Jordan Lee. Robertson's toss of 37.05m was good for third overall behind Lynchburg's Krystle Landes (37.97m) and Virginia's Tara Karin (45.30m), while Lee took 12th place with a throw of 26.87m.
In the hammer throw, Alyssa Girvin took 14th overall (out of 41) with a toss of 43.25m. Rookies Charlise Morgan and Rebecca Gardner finished behind Girvin in 28th and 37th, respectively, with throws of 35.34m and 32.56m.
Elon Track and Field Concludes Action at Liberty
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Elon University Track and Field team wrapped up the final day of the Liberty Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, April 2, at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex, as the Phoenix recorded several top performances in nearly every event.
In the 1,500-meter event, rookie Julie Hart topped the 67-runner field with a time of 4:40.13, just under three seconds shy of her school-record mark she set on March 26 at the Raleigh Relays. Just behind Hart, Emily Fournier took sixth place after clocking in at 4:55.21. Courtney Whalen and Christine Pacewicz were the next pair of runners to finish in the event, taking 10th and 12th, respectively. Whalen crossed the finish line at 4:59.39, while Pacewicz finished at 5:00.49.
Reigning Southern Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week Veronica Day had anoher impressive day at Liberty, winning the long jump with a leap of 5.72m, while taking third in the triple jump at 11.70m. Lauren Hawkesworth also had a solid performance in the triple jump with a leap of 11.37m.
The team of Sarah Skogen, Cara Hughes, Bria Bell and Amy Salek had a solid performance in the 4x100-meter relay, as the Phoenix placed first, besting the likes of behind Virginia, East Tennessee State and Appalachian State with a time of 48.55. Bell took sixth in the 200-meter with a time of 25.19. The same four-runner crew placed first in the 4x400 with a time of 3:52.33, besting the likes of Appalachian State and Virginia.
Elon took put three runners in the top-11 in the 100-meter event, leading with Dana Cataldo's third place finish with a time of 12.50. Rookie Kayleigh Birks placed ninth with a time of 12.80, while Hughes tied for 11th after clocking in at 13.11.
The Phoenix sprinters continued to shine in the 400-meter event, as Salek took runner-up in the finals to East Tennessee State's Jasmine Ingram with a time of 55.54. Elon put two more in the top-12 in the event with Skogen and Veronica Luedke. Skogen took 11th after clocking in at 59.10, while Luedke was just behind in 12th with a time of 59.13.
Elon had a solid showing in the 800-meter event, as Brennan McDavid took 11th overall with a time of 2:23.74, just a hair shy of making a top-10 time.
The track and field team heads down the road next weekend, April 8-9, for the Duke Invitational.
Georgia Southern Track & Field Qualifies 15 for Florida Relays
STATESBORO, Ga. - Five relay teams and two individuals will represent the Georgia Southern Track and Field team at the Florida Relays this weekend. The Eagle relay teams in the 4X100, 4X400, 4X800, the Sprint Medley Relay and Shuttle Hurdle Relay will participate in this annual event in Gainesville, Fla., the largest meet in the region. Junior Azura Robillard and sophomore Sara Curry qualified as individuals. Robillard is set to compete in the Javelin event and Curry in the 5,000 meter Run.
"This meet is the premier meet for this side of the region and is one of the largest events for with both the Florida and Texas meets," said Eagles Head Track and Field Coach Natalie Smith. "With this being a big qualifying year for the Olympics we will see some of the best professional athletes and competition the U.S. has to offer this weekend."
Robillard ranks seventh in the Southern Conference 2011 performance list with her throw of 104'5" at the Shamrock Invitational in mid-March. Curry set the University record in the outdoor 5,000 meter event with a time of 18:23.14 at the same meet.
The lineup for the Eagle 4X100 meter Relay Team this weekend is the same one that posted a 2011 season-best time of 47.16 at the UCF Invitational last weekend. Jasmine Billings, Ebony Carter, Amber Vaughn and Kwajelin Holsendolph look to drop their relay time as they compete against some of the nation's top relay teams.
Carter, who holds the Eagles' top times in the 100 meter and 200 meter Dash, has been added to the 4X400 Relay team. Kristiana Towns is set to kick off the race with Racquel Daly in the second spot. Carter takes the third leg and Holsendolph will anchor the team. In the 4X800, Georgia Southern sends the same team that placed fifth at the Shamrock Invitational with Robillard, Daly, Morgan Jefferson and Asea Mayfield on the final leg.
"Our team is very excited, and if weather permits we will see some outstanding times this weekend," Smith said. "Our 4x100 and 4x400 teams are looking to move into the top two of the SoCon standings. We have moved a couple of things around this week and made some changes. We will see how it pans out on Saturday."
The Shuttle Hurdle Relay team features three freshmen and Billings. Holsendolph, Billings, Stephanie Hicks and Dana Edwards are set for this race. Cherelle King, Ray Toomer and Mayfield will fill the final three spots of the Sprint Medley Relay with a final decision on who will run the first leg, Billings or Jefferson, prior to the race.
Georgia Southern 4X100 Relay Team Records Season-Best Mark at Florida Relays
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Georgia Southern's 4X100 Relay team recorded its best time of the 2011 season with a 46.93 time at the Florida Relays, taking .23 seconds off its previous best time of 47.16. The quartet of Jasmine Billings, Ebony Carter, Amber Vaughn and Kwajelin Holsendolph ran a sub-47 second mark in the event for Georgia Southern for the first time since the 2010 Southern Conference Outdoor Championship meet.
Georgia Southern was one of more than 35 women's track and field programs represented at the event and sent 15 members of the team to this highly competitive meet. Five Eagle relay teams and two individuals qualified to compete against some of the nation's top programs.
In the 4X100 meter Shuttle Hurdle Relay, Georgia Southern finished eighth in the event with a time just under a minute at 59.95. Billings ran the first 200 meter leg of the 1600 Sprint Medley Relay with Cherelle King taking the second 200 meter leg. Ray Toomer and Asea Mayfield finished with the 400 and 800 meter legs of the race, respectively. The Eagles finished with a time of 4:08.72 for 19th place.
The Eagle team of Azura Robillard, Racquel Daly, Morgan Jefferson and Asea Mayfield took eighth place overall (9:25.13) in the 4X800 Relay. The 4X400 Relay team posted a time of 3:56.75, just .12 seconds off its performance at the UCF Invitational last week.
Competing as an individual, Sara Curry ran an 18:32.14 in the 5,000 meter Run for her second-best time of the 2011 season. The sophomore from Lawrenceville, Ga., broke the University record last month at the Shamrock Invitational.
The Eagles will compete next weekend at the Seminole Invite in Tallahassee, Fla.
PALADIN WOMEN'S 4X800M RELAY TEAM SETS SCHOOL RECORD
SHELTON WINS 3,000M STEEPLECHASE AT TERRIER RELAYS
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Furman women's 4x800m relay team of junior Erin Barker, sophomore Emily Wirzba, freshman Catherine Burton, and senior Jenna Callahan took first place and set a new school record with a time of 9:16.83 to lead the Paladins at the Terrier Relays Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C. The old record of 9:17.78 was set in 2006.
Junior Rebecca Shelton led all Paladin individuals at the meet, winning the 3,000m Steeplechase with a time of 11:33.21. Besides winning the 4x800m, Furman also took first place in the distance medley relay, as Burton, junior Brooke Mosteller, Barker, and Callahan recorded a time of 12:18.81 for the victory.
The Furman men's team notched two relay wins, with the 4x800m team of sophomore Wilkerson Given, freshman James Perez, freshman Jack Klecker, and junior Lee Gilmer turning in a time of 7:49.57. The distance medley relay team of Given, freshman Zachary Duskin, Perez, and Gilmer also took first with a time of 10:11.38.
The Paladins will compete at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C. on April 9.
Terrier Relays: Wofford Has Good Showing in Home Meet
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Wofford College men's and women's track and field teams hosted the inaugural Terrier Relays Saturday at Viking track with a solid performance turned in by both squads. The Terriers Relays was a unique team scored relay style event.
Men's 5000m
Matt Menard was the only Terrier to compete in the event. He ran a time of 16:50.34 to finish in tenth overall.
Women's 4x1600m Relay
The Terriers finished in fourth place and scored six points with a time of 22:30.59.
Men's 4x400m Relay
Wofford ran a 3:46.92 and finished in eight place.
Women's 4x400m Relay
The Wofford relay team took second with a time of 4:08.27 winnig eight points.
Women's Javelin
Ashleigh Padgett threw a 30.71m to finish in thrid place, while Kathleen Woods threw a distance of 19.8m for 18th place. Wofford finished in fourth in the event.
Women's High Jump
The Wofford women finished tied for second in the high jump event. The Terriers finished with a total mark of 3. Wofford's Kaitlin Brown posted a 1.55m mark and Tiffani Beebe jumped a 1.45m mark.
Women's Distance Medley Relay
The Wofford women finished in fourth in the distance medley relay. The Terriers finished with a time of 13:27.82 and earn five points. Caitlin Dodd, Nicole Klasnic, Kim Stauffer, Caroline Burdett ran for the Terriers.
Men's Distance Medley Relay
The Wofford men finished in fifth in the Distance Medley Event. The Terriers finished with a time of 11:11.18. Mavrick Harris, Ben Boyles, Chase Wolfe and Russell Baker competed in the event.
Women's 1600 Meter Sprint Medley Relay
The Wofford women finished second in the 1600 Meter Sprint Medley Relay. The Terriers finished with a time of 4:17.08, helping move the women to sixth overall in the team score.
Men's Shot Put
The Wofford men finished in eigth in the shot put. Andrew McCurry had the lone throw for the Terriers and posted an 11.25m mark.
Women Discus Throw
The Wofford women finished in sixth in the discus. Kathleen Woods had the lone throw and finished with a 27.46 mark.
Men's 1600 Meter Sprint Medley Relay
The Wofford men posted the best results for the first heat of the event, but finished third overall in the final results. The Terriers posted a 3:42.64 time.
Men's High Jump
Wofford finished in first for the men's high jump. Joe Bailey posted the best result in the event with a 1.95m jump. Chase Wolfe tallied a 1.75m jump and the Terriers totaled a 3.7 mark.
Men's 4x800 Meter Relay
Th Wofford men finished in fourth in the 4x800 meter relay finals. The men finished with a 8:08.56 time.
Men's Javelin Throw
The Wofford men finishd in fourth with a final mark of 81.61 and five points. Andrew McCurry finished with a 40.76 mark and Chris Visage finished in seventh with a 40.85 mark.
Women's Javelin Throw
The Wofford women fnished in fourth with a final mark of 50.51 and six points. Wofford's Ashleigh Padgett threw for third with a 30.71 mark and Kathleen Woods threw for a 19.8 mark.

Samford Wraps Up Competition In Tiger Track Classic
AUBURN, Ala. ---- The Samford track and field team wrapped up competition Saturday evening in the Tiger Track Classic hosted by Auburn University.
In the women's running events, Madeline Cross took 33rd place in the 200 meters with a time of 25.94 followed by Tatum Moffett in 36th place with a time of 26.06. Moffett also took 14th place in the 400 meters with a personal best of 57.47.
Hillary Neal placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.70 while Holly Benson placed eighth with a time of 2:16.26. Jessica Van Ausdall ran a personal best of 4:37.50 in the 1500 meters to earn third place while Alli Keithan took 23rd place with a time of 5:01.93.
In the women's 3000 meters, the Bulldogs ran three event veterans and three first-time competitors. Lauren D'Alessio took first place in her first time running the event. She posted a time of 9:49.97. Jillian Klassen placed second with a personal best of 9:54.75, and Ina Ables placed 12th with a time of 10:36.21 in her first time running the event. Freshman Claire Grogan placed 17th with a time of 10:44.98 followed by Lauren Pilcher in 21st with a personal best of 10:53.52 and Lillie Jackson in 27th place with a personal best of 11:07.96.
Julie McDonald led the Bulldog women in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best of 14.36 to take 12th place. Macy Conger followed with a personal best of 14.87 to earn 18th place while Morgan Tyler (14.90) placed 19th and Ashley Cope (15.25) placed 29th.
Danielle Blanco led in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best of 1:02.84 to finish in 10th place. Morgan Tyler placed 13th with a time of 1:03.88 while Leslie Graf placed 15th with a personal best of 1:04.58. Julie McDonald took 21st place with a personal best of 1:07.28 and Ashley Bridenbaugh finished 23rd with a time of 1:07.78.
Deanna Zidar won the steeplechase with a time of 11:33.39 while the women's 4x400-meter relay team (Moffett, Neal, Benson and Van Ausdall) placed 12th with a time of 4:00.81.
In the women's field events, Chenelle Terry matched her own school record in the high jump with a height of 5-07.00 to take sixth place.
In the pole vault, Laura Bedsole led the Bulldogs in sixth place, clearing a height of 11-07.75 which matches her own personal best. Ashley Cope vaulted a personal best of 11-01.75 to take 10th place followed by Mary Barron in 11th with the same mark. Rachel Gregory finished 19th with a personal best of 10-08.00.
Macy Conger notched a personal best in the long jump with a leap of 17-08.75 to finish 12th while Morgan Tyler (38-10.25) finished 10th in the triple jump followed by Emily Allen (37-08.50) in 13th with a personal best.
Shelby Builta finished sixth in the discus throw with a toss of 135-03.
In the men's running events, Alex Richter led the men in the 200 meters with a time of 22.16 to take 12th place. Jonathan Bush finished 25th with a time of 22.79 and Brad Bostic finished 41st with a time of 23.57.
Henry Stevens-Carty finished 17th in the 400 meters with a time of 49.05 in his first time running the event while Bush placed 20th with a personal best of 49.15 and Richter took 22nd with a personal best of 49.22.
Ramsey Whilte finished 11th in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.12. Layton Dorsett took seventh in the 1500 meters with a personal best of 3:51.67 while James Graham finished 26th with a time of 4:12.05.
Cavan Corcoran took sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.85 and finished 15th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.71.
Blaise Carie notched a new personal best of 9:03.90 in the steeplechase as he finished almost nine seconds ahead of the pack to win the event. Scott Cope placed seventh in the event with a personal best of 9:29.90.
Brandon Bassett, Corcoran, Donald Cooper and Zac Epperson ran the 4x400-meter relay, clocking a time of 3:25.30 to finish in 15th place.
Tyler Kemp placed ninth in the high jump with a personal best of 6-07.50 while Chris Davis finished 11th in the shot put with a toss of 46-09.50.
Michael Seaman won his second pole vault of the outdoor season, clearing a height of 17-00.75. Owen Wagoner followed in third place with a personal best of 16-06.75 while Patrick Wells finished fourth with a mark of 16-00.75 and Zac Epperson finished 13th with a mark of 14-01.25.
Samford will compete in the Ole Miss Invitational next Saturday, April 9, before hosting the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, April 22-23, at the brand new Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
Catamounts Conclude the Tiger Track Classic Saturday
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - A day after breaking the school record in the hammer throw, senior Zakiyyah Stewart broke the school discus record with a throw of 44.63m (146'5"), earning her third place. The Hickory, N.C.-native shattered Ericka Crawford's throw of 142'8" which was set back in 1992. Aside from setting two new school records, Stewart also set a new personal best in the shot put with a throw of 13.98m (45'10.50"), good enough for fifth place. All told, the senior earned four top-five finishes over the weekend, including a win in the hammer throw.
For the men, the 400-meter hurdles event proved to be a success for the Catamounts, putting four runners in the top 10 who all ran personal bests. Cordell Livingston ran a personal best 52.17, earning the sophomore second place. Also earning top-five honors was classmate Tyler Bentley, who also the event in 54.27. Jordan Blazer finished eighth in 54.72 and freshman Sam Lusty came across the line in 55.13.
Livingston ran a season best in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing fourth in 14.66. Sophomore Tyler Bentley finished just outside of the top 10, placing 11th with a personal best 15.10.
In the women's 400-meter, junior Felisha Garren finished fourth - second collegiate finisher - with a time of 54.88. The time was a personal best for Garren.
Freshman Joceylyn Keen earned a top-10 finish in the 800m, with a personal best of 2:15.76.
Sophomore Morgan Turner picked up two top-10 finishes in Auburn. Turner placed seventh in the 1500-meter with a season best 4:42.43 and fifth in the 3000-meter run with a personal best 10:08.41.
In the men's long jump, Lawren Willard placed second with a season best leap of 7.26m (23'10"). It's the third top-five finish of the outdoor season in as many meets.
The relays once again proved to be a strong point for the Catamounts. In the women's 4x100-meter relay, the team of Raven Parrish, Felicia Paulding, Janise Robinson and Felisha Garren ran a season best 46.54. Two more season best times were ran in the women's 4x100-meter relay, 46.54, and the men's 4x400-meter relay, 3:10.89. Johnson C. Smith narrowly defeated WCU in the men's 4x400-meter relay coming across the stripe in 3:10.61.
Western Carolina will be back in action this Saturday at home in Cullowhee, as WCU hosts the Mountains vs. Beaches meet. The meet is free to the public, and fans are encouraged to attend.
Davidson Men's Track & Field Claims Two Events at Terrier Relays.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Davidson relay teams claimed the top two places in the 4x1600-meter relay and freshman Stewart Dalton won the long jump to lead the Wildcats men's track and field team at the Terrier Relays hosted by Wofford College Saturday at Viking Track.
Dalton won the long jump with a leap of 21-8 (6.60m).
The Wildcats claimed the top two places in the 4x1600-meter relay as the 'Cats' "B" squad won in 17:56.84, while the "A" team took second in 18:05.09.
The 'Cats' "A" squad took second in the distance medley relay in 10:20.37, which ranks as the third fastest time in school history, and the "B" team took third in 10:46.62.
Davidson teams took second and third place in the 4x800-meter relay, as well, with apair of Davidson all-time top-10 performances. The 'Cats' "B" squad finished in 7:54.87, while the "A" squad took third in 7:59.08.
The Wildcats also had a pair of strong individual performances. Junior Taylor Martin placed third in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.83, and freshman Michael Lorentsen placed sixth in the pole vault at 12-5 1?2 (3.80m) to crack Davidson's all-time top-10 performers list in the event.
Davidson will next compete at both the Duke Invitational (Friday and Saturday) and the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational (Saturday).
Women's Sprint Medley Relay Team Breaks School Record at Florida Relays
Gainesville, Fla. - Chalita Johnson, Francesca McCrary, Erinn Carter and Micah Wessinger established a new school record in the women's sprint medley relay, as The Citadel track and field teams competed at the 67th Pepsi Florida Relays on Friday and Saturday, April 1-2 at the Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium. The Florida Relays featured several collegiate teams such as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Southeastern Conference (SEC), as well as club teams, such as Nike and Adidas, from various areas of the country.
With a time of 4:15.58, Johnson, McCrary, Carter and Wessinger combined to shatter the previous time of 4:23.35 set in 2007 by Jodi Whittle, Alexis Moore, Megan Jenkins and Katheryn Gatewood. Additionally, the quartet competed in the women's 4x200m relay and became the No. 4 all-time team in The Citadel's top-10 list after posting a time of 1:47.28.
Wessinger also had a standout performance in the women's 800m. Her time of 2:14.21 gave her an 18th place finish out of 47 competitors.
On the men's side sophomore Brunson Miller also sprinted to an impressive finish in the 400m dash as he finished in 21st place out of 61 competitors with a time of 48.00. His finish also earned him a place among the top-15 collegiate competitors.
Miller teamed with three other Bulldogs on two different occasions as participants in the men's 4x200m relay and the sprint medley relay, each becoming the No. 3 squads on The Citadel's all-time list. The 4x200m relay team, consisting of Daniel Till, Christian Graham, Blane Woodfin and Miller, just missed the school record mark a time of 1:27.58. Till, Graham and Miller also teamed with John Gatewood for the men's sprint medley relay and finished the race tied for third among the school's most prolific runners after posting a time of 3:27.39. The group tied a previous mark that was set in 1989 by Tony Brevard, Phillip Florence, Ronnie Schoonover and Mike Cason.
Coming up next, the Cadets will split their participation between the Duke Invitational to be held April 8-9 and the Furman Invitational also on April 9.
