SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State junior Dennis Moore has been named Southern Conference Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week while the Mountaineers' senior Malcolm Styers was named the SoCon Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for their performances at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championship, April 22-23. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
Moore, a junior from Asheville, N.C., won the 100m and 200m dashes and ran the opening leg in the winning 4 x 100m relay team at the SoCon Championship in Birmingham, Ala. In the 100m dash, Moore ran 1 10.39 to take first on a podium that featured all Mountaineers. In the 200m dash, Moore's time of 20.81 was 0.01 seconds away from tying a 24-year old SoCon record. Moore ranks 28th nationally and third in the Southeast Region in the 100m, 30th nationally and fourth regionally in the 200m and 19th nationally and third regionally in the 4 x 100m relay.
Styers, a senior at Appalachian State, competed in the shot put, discus and hammer throw this weekend at the conference championship. The Newton, N.C., native, placed third in the shot put with a distance of 51'11.25" (15.83m), second in the discus with a mark of 155'06" (47.40m) and first in the hammer throw with a toss of 191'04" (58.31).
