SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina junior has been named Southern Conference Women's Outdoor Track Athletes of the Week while Elon senior Veronica Day was named the SoCon Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for their performances at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championship, April 22-23. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
Garren, a junior from Hendersonville, N.C., won the 400m dash at the SoCon Championship in Birmingham, Ala., with a time of 53.99. It was the fastest time recorded in the conference this season and ranks fifth in the Southeast Region. Garren also finished second in the 200m dash with a time of 24.23 and ran anchor in the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays. Western Carolina finished first in the 4 x 100m and second in the 4 x 400m.
Day, a senior at Elon, finished won the conference triple jump with a distance of 41'05.75" (12.64m). The Vienna, Va., native also recorded a mark of 19'04.75" (5.91m) in the long jump, which placed her second in the event. Her triple jump distance ranks 36th nationally and fifth regionally. Day also ran the third leg of the 4 x 100m relay that finished third in the conference championship.
