CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The College of Charleston and Samford will meet for the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Championship Saturday at 2:00 p.m. after both teams captured semifinal wins Friday afternoon at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. College of Charleston posted a 4-1 victory over Furman while Samford defeated Elon in the second semifinal.
The No. 2 Cougars came away with the doubles point thanks to wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Tom Delme and Stephen Hardy beat Joel Cook and Alex Christ 8-3 at No. 2. Mickael Trintignac and Billy Kenny downed Andrei Chvetsov and Marco Aru, 8-2 at No. 3 to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.
Kyle Parker pushed CofC ahead, 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Cook at No. 5 before Furman's Sawyer Duncan topped Lukas Koncilia to put the Paladins (9-18) on the board. With College of Charleston holding a 2-1 lead in the match, Hardy came away with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Robbie Aru at No. 6. Mickael Boyer's 6-4, 6-4 win over Tyler Droll at No. 4 sent the Cougars to the championships match.
Fernando Costa's three-set win (6-2, 7-5, 6-1) over Cody Stauffer-MacDowell at No. 5 singles sent Samford to the championship match as the fifth-seeded Bulldogs knocked off the top-seeded Phoenix.
Wins at No. 1 and No. 3 gave the Phoenix the doubles point against Samford (18-6). Philip Nemec and Chase Helpingstine topped Oliver Reynolds and Carl Abalos 8-4 at the top position while Thomas Darling and Eric Turner posted an 8-5 win over Carson Kadi and Fernando Costa.
Kadi defeated Nemec, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to even the match (1-1), while Reynolds put Samford in front with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Helpingstine at No. 4. Alexander Sajonz knocked off Darling 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) for the Bulldogs' third point before Costa's win clinched the match for Samford. Elon finished the season 18-7.
Men's action resumes at the Champions club Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
