SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., will serve as host of the 2011 Southern Conference Men's and Women's' Tennis Championships this week (April 20-23). The four-day event features all 22 men's and women's teams from the Southern Conference.
College of Charleston and Elon tied for the regular season championship in men's competition as both teams posted an identical 9-1 mark in league play. The Phoenix earned the top seed by virtue of a 5-2 win over CofC on March 29. The UNCG Spartans are the No. 3 seed after finishing conference play at 8-2. Appalachian State (7-3 SoCon) and Samford (6-4 SoCon) earned the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively. The top five seeds earned a bye and will begin play during Thursday's quarterfinals.
Wednesday's first round play begins at 2:00 p.m. Eight-seeded Georgia Southern will take on Chattanooga. The winner will advance to face Elon Thursday. Wofford, the No. 7 seed, will square off against Davidson Wednesday with the winner taking on College of Charleston. The final opening-round match on Wednesday is the sixth-seeded Furman Paladins taking on No. 11 The Citadel, with the UNCG waiting for the winner. The men's championship match is scheduled for Saturday (April 23) at 2:00 p.m.
The College of Charleston's women's team, which won last year's tournament, finished the regular season a perfect 10-0 in conference play. The UNCG Spartans earned the No. 2 seed, while Furman is third. Samford posted a 7-3 league mark and earned the No. 4 seed where the Bulldogs will face No. 5 Appalachian State on Thursday.
The women's tournament begins with three matches Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. The Appalachian State Mountaineers earned the No. 8 seed and will face No. 9 Wofford. The No. 7 Georgia Southern Eagles take on No. 10 Western Carolina, while No. 6 Elon goes up against No. 11 Davidson.
The women's championship match is set for Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
