Melian Puigventos Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Georgia Southern's Juan Melian Puigventos has been named the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played April 11-17.  Melian Puigventos won both singles matches and went 1-1 in doubles competition as the Eagles fell to College of Charleston (5-2) before defeating Chattanooga (4-3) last week.  The Player of the Week selections are made by the conference office.

The sophomore ran his winning streak to 15 at No. 1 singles for the Eagles last week as he topped CofC's Lukas Koncilia, 6-0, 6-3, before holding off Chattanooga's Roberto Vieira, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.  Melian Puigventos' match against Vieira was just the third time this season he has been extended to a third set.  Melian Puigventos is now 21-1 in singles play this spring, the highest single-season winning percentage in school history.

GSU's team of Melian Puigventos and Matthijs Verdam went 1-1 at No. 1 doubles last week.  They opened the week with an 8-7 (8-6) loss to CofC's Koncilia and Kyle Parker.  Melian Puigventos and Matthijs Verdam then held pulled out a 9-8 (7-3) win over Chattanooga's top team of Chris Smith and William Disterdick.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Elon's Philip Nemec, UNCG's Yaroslav Litus, and Samford's Fernando Costa.
